Hulu's Betrayal: Dirty Secrets is the recently released entry in the network's anthology series based on the hit true-crime podcast hosted by Andrea Gunning.

Betrayal Season 4 exposes the double life of Colorado Springs police officer Joel Kern, the devoted husband of Karoline Borega, who was having affairs with multiple women on the side.

As with previous seasons, Betrayal: Dirty Secrets peels back the layers of Karoline Borega's story, where trust was weaponized in devastating ways. In a recent interview, the women opened up about the creative journey, discussing how they balanced emotional storytelling with investigative reporting and exposed Joel Kern's lies to the world.

This is how Hulu's Betrayal: Dirty Secrets was brought to life

In an exclusive interview on Good Morning America, host Andrea Gunning and Karoline Borega break down how Hulu's Betrayal: Dirty Secrets was brought to life.

Borega recalled discovering Gunning's podcast while driving with her then-16-year-old daughter in the middle of the night. This was when Karoline Borega and Nicole discovered Joel Kern's deceitful ways, which is why Andrea Gunning's podcast really hit a chord with the mother-daughter duo. As Borega revealed, a few episodes in, she was inspired by the strength & bravery and decided to write to Gunning, requesting a feature on her family.

Andrea Gunning initially believed Karoline Borega's story could be adapted in Hulu's Betrayal: Dirty Secrets. But she became sure about the subject once she heard Joel's recordings and understood the extent of his lies and betrayal.

Andrea Gunning was certainly moved by Borega's tale:

''When we saw the investigation files and heard the recordings, they really showed the extent of Joel's behavior and his lies, and we knew this had to be a season.''

This revelation was followed by a brief clip from Hulu's Betrayal: Dirty Secrets, as Karoline Borega learned her husband's true nature, who prioritized his affairs with other women over seeing his sick daughter in the hospital.

Karoline Borega concluded the segment by hoping that her story would inspire and validate the stories of women who reach out to Gunning's podcast:

''I not only see it as justice, but I feel like it's validation for the storytellers and the women who write in...it's so validating to see that the split-screen life and what you thought was normal is something that you're able to heal from and you begin to feel this validation and truth from.''

Both Borega and Gunning believe that Hulu's docu-series is more than just true-crime pieces and brave tales about the women who healed and fought back through their resilience. Gunning hopes that Betrayal serves as a reminder for every suffering woman that no deception is permanent and that they can rebuild their lives.
