Beyond Society is an upcoming Netflix documentary series that will tell us how life continued for Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 survivors after they were rescued. Interestingly, the series is a non-fictional continuation of the 2023 film, Society of the Snow, based on Pablo Vierci's novel of the same name. While the film told us the story of how the initial survivors of the crash managed to survive for 72 days in the harsh cold climate, the upcoming documentary series will tell us how life was for the survivors after they were rescued by authorities.Beyond Society teaser reveals the hardships of the survivors after their rescueAs the Beyond Society teaser tells us, it was almost unbelievable that the survivors of Flight 571 had managed to survive at 4,000 meters above sea level for over 70 days. The chartered plane carrying an amateur Old Christians Club rugby team and their friends and family left Montevideo, Uruguay, for Santiago, Chile, on October 13, 1972.After a weather-induced layover in Mendoza, Argentina, the pilot miscalculated the plane's position and started descending too early while still surrounded by high peaks. As a result, the plane crashed into a mountain ridge at 11,500 feet before sliding into a glacier valley. 12 passengers died initially or soon after. Many of them passed away in the time between the crash and the rescue, leaving 16 survivors at the end.As the Beyond Society teaser reveals, the upcoming three-part series will feature interviews of the survivors and the family members of those who didn't survive. Moreover, we will also get to see interviews with the authors of Alive and Society of the Snow, Piers Paul Read and Pablo Vierci, respectively, who based the novels on the Flight 571 crash.Beyond Society will also feature interviews with Frank Marshall and J.A. Bayona, who directed the films based on the novels. Marshall directed Alive, while Bayona directed Society of the Snow. The teaser opens with one of the survivors saying:"When we crashed into the mountains, it was like going through a portal into another dimension."As expected, there was a lot of media attention around the case. As we see in the Beyond Society teaser, one of the first questions the survivors were asked was if there was any cannibalism. It was soon revealed that they did have to consume the remains of the dead passengers to survive. As the teaser reveals, life was difficult for the survivors since they had to live in the same neighborhoods as the families of the passengers who hadn't survived. Moreover, life was never peaceful for the survivors because books began to be written about the incident, and as one survivor says in the teaser:"One book after another. They never let it rest. We can never leave our grief behind."The teaser also reveals that the 2023 film, Society of the Snow, did some good. It was the first time in years the daughter of a passenger who didn't survive was able to experience what her mother might have gone through. Moreover, the teaser reveals that thirty years after the crash, the rugby team was able to play the match they couldn't due to the crash. The documentary series is created by J. A. Bayona and Carlos Torres. Torres is also the director of the documentary series. The producers behind the series are Bayona, Sandra Hermida, and Belén Atienza.Beyond Society will be released on Netflix on December 18, 2026.For more articles like this, follow Soapcentral.
