"Blood is freedom" - Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story teases how the infamous axe murderer was born

Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story is all set to drop on September 17, 2026, on Netflix. This is the fourth season of the crime drama anthology series Monsters, which is created by Ian Brennan. As the name suggests, this season will follow the murder suspect Lizzie Borden, who was tried and acquitted of killing her parents (father and stepmother) in Fall River, Massachusetts. This is also infamously known as the 1892 axe murders.

Starring Ella Beatty in the leading role, the series also stars Charlie Humman, Rebecca Hall, Vicky Krieps, Jessica Barden, Sarah Paulson, Joey Polastri, to name a few. All eight episodes of Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story will be released on the premiere day. This will be the first season of the anthology series that will focus on a female murderer.

The first trailer for Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story is out now, and it features Ella Beauty as Lizzie Borden, who says,

Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story follows the story of Lizzie Borden, a young Massachusetts woman and a schoolteacher. She was tried and acquitted of the 1892 axe double murder (her father, Andrew, and stepmother, Abby).

Interestingly, no one was ever charged, and the case remains unsolved to this day. Lizzie, however, has been assumed to be the culprit. Co-creator Brennan told Vanity Fair,

"They literally thought that a woman was too weak to pick up an axe. To be a woman in that period was to be almost a completely different species. You were treated like you were incapable of not only actions, but thoughts that a man was capable of"

The trailer opens with Lizzie smashing a snail as she reflects on how blood is power. In the next scene, viewers see splashes of blood in a living room as Lizzie walks in bloodied attire.

The viewers then catch a sneak peek of Bridget (Vicky Krieps), the live-in Irish maid, who reveals how both the mansion and Lizzie seem like a mysterious puzzle to her. The trailer also features how Lizzie was mistreated by her father and stepmother. After being mistreated by her parents on multiple occasions, Lizzie says that her house feels like a prison and she needs to escape it.

It teases that both Maggie and Lizzie plan together to put an end to the torture. Maggie, aka Bridget, tells her that a knife is too easy and a rifle is too kind. However, Lizzie suggests that the best way to kill them is with an axe. What follows is a high-speed shot of what happens after the axe murders, when Lizzie becomes the primary suspect even though the investigators say that no woman is capable of killing someone this brutally.
