Boston Blue Season 2 is going to premiere tonight on CBS at 10 pm ET, and a new preview of episode 1 has revealed that Danny will be contemplating giving up something he really wanted. At the end of Season 1, Danny decided to sit for the sergeant's exam so that if he passed it, he could be a guiding figure to his son, just like his father was for him.

The decision to sit for the exam also arose after Lena was shot in the line of work, giving everyone around her quite the scare. The incident made Danny take his life and career more seriously, as the future is never guaranteed. However, a preview of the Boston Blue Season 2 premiere reveals that he might not pursue the position after all.

Boston Blue Season 2 premiere will show Danny at a crossroads

An exclusive TV Insider sneak peek at the Boston Blue Season 2 premiere reveals that Danny Reagan (played by Donnie Wahlberg) has passed the sergeant's exam and will be offered the position of Sergeant Detective. In the video we see Boston Police superintendent Sarah Silver (played by Maggie Lawson) meet Danny and then engage in small talk.

Danny says that he has been sleeping less as he's adjusting life with his girlfriend, Maria Baez (played by Marisa Ramirez), and her adoptive daughter, Elena (played by Eleanor and Penelope Yataco), moving into his apartment. Sarah then tells Danny:

"Tired or not, you aced your sergeant's exam. First try."

Danny doesn't look surprised and responds to her by saying:

“Well, I was raised by two commissioners, so being afraid to not pass the exam was never why I didn’t take the test. It was really because I needed proper motivation."

Sarah guesses the motivation to be Sean (played by Mika Amonsen), Danny's son, and Danny confirms. Sarah then tells him:

"Danny, there's a promotion available. It is yours if you want it... Sergeant Detective in the major case unit.”

But Danny seems hesitant. He asks Sarah if Lena (played by Sonequa Martin-Green) knows he passed the exam and is being offered the promotion. It looks like Danny is hesitant to take up the position because he feels Lena might not take the news well. As much as he wanted the position, Danny also knows that Lena has been serving Boston much longer than him.

Sarah doesn't reveal if Lena knows about the news. But since she was under the impression that Danny really wanted the position, she asks him:

"What are you not telling me?"

Thankfully, Danny doesn't have to give her an answer then since he gets a text from Lena. As he tells Sarah, a new homicide case has come up, and he's needed there. He says:

"It's Lena. We caught a homicide."

Sarah lets him go without any further questions. Thus, this time, Danny manages to avoid telling Sarah why he's reluctant to accept the Sergeant Detective position. But in later episodes of Boston Blue Season 2, we can expect to see him finally decide whether he wants to accept the position or not. We can also expect him to have a conversation with Lena and Maria before he makes the decision.

Boston Blue Season 2 premieres on CBS on October 9, 2026, at 10 pm ET.
