Bridgerton Season 4 Part 1 is here, and a lot has changed in the ton. For the very first time, the focus shifts to the downstairs crew. We got to witness what happens behind the glitz of the drawing rooms. The chaos, the chatter, and the crisis!

The episode opens with the busy Bridgerton's downstairs staff preparing for the arrival of Eloise, Francesca, and Lord Stirling from Scotland. We see the charming footman John, Celia, and Mrs. Wilson greet them. Eventually, the camera pans to the Penwoods. We meet Sophie, who works as a maid for her rude and cruel stepmother, Lady Penwood. Thankfully, the cook Irma Gibbens and footman Alfie are her only allies at the mansion (not to forget Miss Posy Li, who also treats her well).

However, when Lady Penwood realised that Sophie snuck into Lady Violet's masquerade ball and she was Benedict's 'lady in silver', she lost her mind. She forced her to leave the house and seek employment elsewhere. When Sophie left, a maid war began. Yes, she was so capable that she easily did the work of three maids, and when she left, Lady Penwood had to employ other maids from different houses. This started the Great Maid War.

Mrs. Varley, the able and honest housekeeper of the Featheringtons, was also offered an opportunity from the Penwoods. Varley wanted to serve the Featheringtons, but when she saw she wasn't valued anymore, especially by Portia, she chose to leave. In the closing scenes of Bridgerton Season 4 Episode 4, when the Penwoods move to the house next to the Bridgertons, we see Varley opening the door for them. In short, in Bridgerton Season 4, Varley left her job at the Featheringtons and joined as a housekeeper of the Penwoods. Here's more about it.

Did Varley leave the Featheringtons in Bridgerton Season 4?

Mrs. Varley has been the housekeeper of the Featheringtons for years. She served the Featheringtons without keeping an ounce of expectation. She is undoubtedly the most able housekeeper of the ton. Yet she never received the appreciation for her job. From arranging the grand Dankworth Finch ball to forging the signature of Jack Featherington to keeping the solicitor away for months, Mrs. Varley always did her best for the Featheringtons. Thus, when she got a lucrative offer from the Penwoods during the great maid war, she first spoke with Portia.

Portia initially said that she'll look into the matter, but she did not take it quite seriously. She believed wholeheartedly that Mrs. Varley would never leave them. Portia gifted her old dresses to Mrs. Varley, giving a lame excuse that they were short of funds and that if they raised Varley's pay, they had to increase the others' too.

Poor Mrs. Varley was left with no option but to agree. But when she saw Portia returning from a shopping spree, she was stunned. She confronts Portia and tells her she had the money to spend on shopping, but none for her. It was quite the eye-opening conversation as Varley told her true feelings for the first time. She didn't hold back, and neither did Portia.

Honestly, it was heartbreaking to see the rift between Portia and Varley. They had been through the worst together and yet managed to survive. In the end, when we see Varley opening the door for the new house for the Penwoods, it is clear that she quit her job at the Featheringtons.
