Brothers premiere breakdown: How Ma Mac's confession kick-starts a mystery for Woody and Matthew

Brothers is Apple TV's latest highly anticipated comedy series, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, who each play a fictional version of their lives. The series debuted with a double-episode premiere on September 23, which kicked off an exciting paternity mystery for longtime friends, Matthew and Woody. The series follows Matthew and Woody as they uncover a family secret that they might be brothers.

According to The Cinemaholic and Fandom Wire, Episode 1 dealt with the aftermath of Olivia Harrelson's canceled wedding. The fallout took a toll on Woody, and he decided it was time for yet another escape to his friend Matthew's ranch in Texas. But this time, Woody's family decided to tag along. Matthew was in the middle of writing his big speech for his late father, Big Mac, to honour him at an upcoming jersey-retirement ceremony.

While Matthew was already struggling with his speech, Woody and his family's unannounced arrival added to his discomfort, which set the chaotic mood for the premiere.

As Woody chatted with Ma Mac, he stumbled upon a potential family secret that he and his longtime friend might actually be brothers.

Brothers premiere breakdown: A rift between Woody and Matthew

While Matthew was determined to finish his speech in Brothers Episode 1, Woody lured him for a drink. Their adventure took a turn when a misunderstanding with their Uber driver left them stranded in the middle of nowhere until a TMZ reporter offered them a lift in his car. The outing proved successful for Matthew, who finally found the inspiration to complete his speech after listening to a Big Mac song in the car.

Now that Matthew was content with his speech, Woody took him to the Jackpot Rodeo arena in Brothers Episode 1. Turns out, Matthew was not allowed to ride a bull in his childhood, but Woody wanted to fulfil his friend's wish. Matthew handed his tablet to Woody and geared up to ride the bull, only to end up on the floor in less than two minutes. When Woody approached Matthew to help him, he accidentally dropped the tablet with the speech near the bull's hooves. Seeing his hard work get crushed under a bull's leg, Matthew was naturally angry at Woody and lashed out at him. While Matthew instantly realized that he was too harsh, Woody had already decided to move out of the ranch.

Ma Mac confessed her secret in the Brothers premiere

While Matthew reached the college and gave his big speech, Woody caught up with Ma Mac over a drink before moving out of the ranch for good. While talking, Ma Mac revealed that she was in a relationship with Woody's father, Clive V. Harrelson, during one of her divorces from Big Mac. Ma Mac's drunken confession led to a possibility for Woody: that Clive might be Matthew's biological father, making him his friend's half-brother.

While Woody was confused over this family secret in the Brothers premiere, Matthew arrived and apologized to his friend. Matthew dropped another bombshell and revealed that he was running for Texas governor to fulfill his father's political dream. Woody could not bring himself to share the truth about Matthew's biological father and kept it a secret for now. But he was determined to explore this connection further and set out to dig into his father's past.

Woody's digging landed him in trouble in the Brothers premiere

While Matthew took his son Wyatt on a traditional hunting adventure, Woody investigated his father's past in Saddle Saloon. Bartender Creaky Joe denied seeing a woman of Ma Mac's description with Clive but later rang somebody, telling them about Woody's snooping.

Vegan Woody was horrified to discover that his daughters had joined Matthew and Wyatt on their hunting trip and followed them. While returning, the friends continued to bicker, and Woody ended up accidentally ramming his truck into a deer, which died on the spot. A guilt-stricken Woody held a funeral for the deer, and the matter was put to rest.

In the final moments of Brothers Episode 2, Woody received a call from the Saddle Saloon's bartender, offering him information about Clive's past. Woody naturally rushed to the bar, only to find that it was a trap after he was knocked unconscious. Woody woke up bound to a chair by the Travis Brothers, who revealed that his father borrowed $1,800 from them in 1972 before disappearing. The Travis Brothers were determined to get their $191,000 back from the Harrelson family.

Before further escalation, Ma Mac showed up with a shotgun, revealing that Woody had 'kicked the hornet’s nest.' While Ma Mac managed to rescue Woody for now, her actions made the paternity mystery even more intriguing, hinting that she was certainly connected to Woody's father's past.
