BTS won't submit their music for the Grammys, and they've explained why

Music fans must be excited for the upcoming Grammys 2027, but if you're an ARMY, make note that BTS has decided not to submit their latest album for consideration. This means that the Bangtan Boys won't earn a Grammy next year despite having some of the best songs.

All seven members: RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook have shared on their Instagram Stories that it was their own decision. BTS explained that they hope music is appreciated for its artistic value rather than being separated according to region or language.

As the 69th Grammy Awards are scheduled for 7 February 2027, the Recording Academy has announced five new award categories. Among those five categories is Best Asian Pop Music Performance. However, the Blood Sweat and Tears stars did not say that this category is the exact reason why they chose not to give their album for consideration.

BTS share why they're sitting out this year's Grammys race

BTS has decided not to move forward with the upcoming Grammys 2027, as all seven members shared identical statements on their Instagram stories at the same time. The announcement made it clear that stepping away from the awards process was a choice made by the members themselves.

The group wrote (translated into English):

"We have decided not to submit an entry for Grammy consideration this year. We hope music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided into region or language. Thank you to the ARMY and everyone for always being with us."

The Bangtan Boys explained that they hope music is appreciated for its artistic value and emotional impact. It shouldn't be separated according to the region it comes from or the language in which it is performed.

While the statement is brief, it offers a glimpse into how BTS views music and recognition on a global stage. They don't just focus on music, but also on being able to connect with listeners without geographical or linguistic boundaries defining it.

Before ending their message, the Dynamite singers also thanked ARMY for their constant support. This way, the globally adored K-pop group has shared the reason they chose not to take part in this year's Grammys submission process and did not offer any further explanation beyond the message they released publicly.

New Grammys category adds context as Recording Academy responds

BTS' decision to step away from the Grammys 2027 came not long after the Recording Academy announced five new categories. As mentioned before, Best Asian Pop Music Performance is one of the additions to this. According to Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr., this category is made for "meaningful use of one or more Asian languages."

It covers K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop and is expected to make meaningful use of one or more Asian languages. After the Fake Love singers confirmed they would not submit their music, Mason Jr. also added that it was sad and further clarified why the Recording Academy came up with five new titles:

"The Asian Pop category was created to celebrate the depth, diversity and extraordinary growth of pop artistry coming out of Asia. The spirit of this new category is to shine a dedicated spotlight on these important artists."

The CEO continued:

"More categories mean more artists’ work is recognized. It’s never to divide, but to expand who is recognized by our 15,000 Grammy voters."

He also pointed out that artists entering the Asian Pop category would still be eligible for the Grammys' biggest honours. Songs and albums submitted there can also compete for major General Field awards such as Record of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year, as the new categories do not limit their opportunities.
