Apple TV's psychological thriller miniseries Cape Fear came to a haunting end with an action-packed & high-stakes finale, fittingly titled The Executioners after the John D. MacDonald novel it is based on.

The finale opened in the aftermath of Anna's confrontation on Crystal's boat. While she managed to survive and swim to safety, the Cadys were left to deal with the fallout. Elsewhere, the Bowdens were finally together after Lexi managed to bail out Tom and Zack was reunited with her sister, who returned to their family home, for the showdown with the man himself.

Here's what happened in the Cape Fear finale.

After Anna surprisingly managed to swim to safety, Max was furious at his family and determined to wipe the slate clean for a fresh start. In a shocking move, Max shot Juliette and Luke (unaware that he is his son) in the Cape Fear finale, while locking Robert in a cage on the boat. As for Crystal, who initially had a chance of survival, the doors were locked in for her when Max doused her boat in gasoline and set it on fire.

After his brutal barbecue, Max remained the last surviving Cady and he aimed for a fresh start. Presuming that Anna and the Bowdens had lost against him, Max opened his restaurant, named “Melissa and Adam”, after his dead wife and unborn child. However, Anna made a surprise entrance on opening day with a Bluetooth speaker in hand, playing Nevaeh's confession to Natalie, which proved that everything she did was on Max's orders. Noa added another layer to the drama in Cape Fear after he presented the USB drive from Crystal's boat, proving that Max forced Amy to commit su*c*de.

While Max had managed to maintain his facade of normalcy in public, the evidence pushed him to the edge and he tried to choke Anna in front of everybody. Needless to say, the cops arrived on time and Max was put behind bars.

With the Bowden family recently reunited in Cape Fear, all was well until the cops showed up at their door and announced that Max had escaped and was at large. While the authorities did a sweep of the Bowdens' house, Max managed to sneak into the house through the roof, took the family hostage and was determined to orchestrate a demented court trial, claiming that the thunder would guide him whether Tom and Anna were responsible for wrongfully sending him to jail.

While Max tied Natalie in zip-ties, he dr*gged Zack, sending him into a hallucinated state. With her children in danger, Anna finally came clean to Max in Cape Fear. After discovering that the jury might decide on an acquittal, Anna did everything in her power to win the case, mainly because she was scared that she might have gotten pregnant with Max's child. This was enough for Max to decide that the Bowdens deserve capital punishment, until Anna dropped the bombshell that Luke might be Max and Melissa's son.

Thanks to Crystal's birth certificate, Anna discovered that Luke was born from an unsupervised home birth. Max's revelation that Crystal was unable to conceive children due to an accident led Anna to a shocking possibility that Crystal might have cut Melissa's child from her belly before killing her, making Luke, the man he just killed on the boat, his son with Melissa.

As Max struggled with this news, Natalie and Zack managed to free their parents for a showdown in the pool.

The final moments of the Cape Fear finale saw Anna and Tom in the pool, trying to drown Max. While it looked like the couple would murder Max, Anna was jolted out of her trance when she saw Natalie shouting 'Kill him' like a madwoman. Deciding that she did not want to set a bad example for her kids by killing a man in front of them, she stopped Tom. With the Bowdens safe, Max was arrested again and will likely spend his remaining life in prison.

Cape Fear concluded on a definitive note. But in the final moments, Natalie hesitated over the DNA test before ultimately deciding not to open it, realizing the truth no longer mattered. Even so, the unopened test leaves the mystery surrounding her parentage unresolved.
