In Apple TV's Cape Fear, the rebooted psychological thriller miniseries based on John D. MacDonald's 1957 novel The Executioners, Max Cady has spent the entire season tearing the Bowden family apart piece by piece. But Episode 7 proves he is far from finished.

Just when Anna and Tom believe they have a chance to seize back control, their desperate gamble only pushes them deeper into the psychological trap that Max has carefully built around them. As old secrets, fractured trust and fear continue to consume the family, every decision they make seems to strengthen their tormentor's grip instead of weakening it.

Titled "Mongrel," Cape Fear Episode 7 raises the stakes by forcing the Bowdens into increasingly dangerous territory. While Anna and Tom set a risky plan in motion to stop Max from tormenting their son, Natalie embarked on a journey of her own to search for answers that could change everything.

More on this in our story.

Cape Fear Episode 7: Exploring Max's firm grip on the Bowdens' children

What started as revenge transformed into a full-blown psychological warfare as Max Cady moved into the Bowdens' neighbourhood and kept an eye on their children. Thanks to Nevaeh's strange antics of hiding inside the Bowdens' walls, Zack was convinced that he was Adam, Max's unborn child and refused to recognize his own parents. Cape Fear Episode 7 delivered one of the worst blows to the Bowdens, after both their children rejected them and surrendered to Max's supernatural charm.

While Zack was already gravitating towards Max, Natalie was also fascinated by him. After Paul abandoned her, she started having doubts that Max was her biological father. Max Cady used Natalie's confusion as a weapon against her and convinced her to go on a road trip with him to hunt down his half-sister, Crystal Cady. As Tom and Anna dealt with Zack's continuous spiral, they were unaware that their daughter had stepped into the lion's den. Since Natalie was fascinated by her mother's past and wanted to learn the details of Max's relationship with Anna, Max admitted that he was her father in Cape Fear Episode 7.

The latest episode ended with Max, as he gave one of his beard hairs to Natalie for a paternity test, setting up a harrowing chain of events that spells trouble for the Bowdens in the upcoming episode.

In addition to Max Cady's firming grip on both Zack and Natalie, the latest episode of Cape Fear introduced yet another danger. Taking advantage of Natalie's deep sleep, Max stole Tom's gun from her bag and used it to murder Ray, who was snooping around on Crystal's boat, wanting to learn more about Cady. Natalie returned the gun to the family's locker, unaware that it had become a murder weapon. With a cunning mastermind like Max, it's safe to assume that he likely cleaned his fingerprints from the weapon, leaving Natalie, Tom and the Bowdens as the prime suspects in Ray's murder.

While Tom and Anna conspired against Max with the latter's estranged father and planted dr*g bottles in his house, this move will bring them no benefit. Cape Fear Episode 7 concluded with Anna's estranged father planting the dr*g bottles inside Max's house, while the couple called in an anonymous tip, assuming that they had outsmarted their enemy.

Since Max Cady is always two steps ahead, the ticking bomb in the locker will do its magic and Natalie will be framed for Ray's murder.
