Cape Fear premiere recap: Max Cady's return, Zack's spiral and Anna's paranoia

Cape Fear is Apple TV's latest psychological thriller miniseries, based on the novel The Executioners by John D. MacDonald and the eponymous 1962 and 1991 film adaptations.

The double-episode premiere introduced Anna and Tom Bowden, a happily married couple of attorneys living in Savannah with their children, Natalie and Zack. However, things took a harrowing turn when Anna learned that Max Cady, a criminal they represented 17 years ago in court, had been released. Max was charged with his wife's murder, who was pregnant at the time. However, after Max's mistress died by su*c*de and left a note and murder weapon confessing to his wife's murder, Max was exonerated for his crimes.

The Cape Fear premiere highlighted Anna's paranoia as she was convinced Max had returned for revenge.

Max attended Anna's fundraiser gala in Cape Fear Episode 1

Cape Fear Episode 1 featured SJLP's (Anna's non-profit organization) fundraising gala, which was important for Anna's firm. The highlight of the night was Byron French, the firm's client, who was given a full pardon and was just released from prison. Anna's boss, Noa, wanted her to use Byron and his wheelchair-bound mother, Bunny, as examples to highlight the firm's good work and motivate people to donate, since the firm was not doing well.

However, the episode took a turn when both Byron and Bunny were nowhere to be found before the gala, much to Noa's disappointment. To make matters worse, Max Cady showed up at the event, and Anna was convinced he would ruin the night. But to her surprise, he gave a heartfelt speech about the firm's good work, which saved the night and pleased Anna's boss.

Later, Max Cady found Anna alone in Cape Fear Episode 1 and revealed that he had gotten a brain injury in prison. However, Anna didn't have much time to dwell on this, as her son Zack had been missing all day.

What's up with Zack?

Cape Fear Episode 1 revealed Zack's harrowing past. Before Max Cady's arrival, the Bowdens were dealing with their son, who got into trouble in school for sharing his girlfriend's compromising pictures in a text chain. This incident not only distanced Zack from his friends but he also had to see a therapist, which highlighted his underlying mental issues. In the present, Zack was talking to a girl on the Internet named 'Angel X'. He also became obsessed with Max Cady's dead wife and saw an AI image of Cady's unborn child, if he were alive now.

Once Anna reached home, she was worried to learn that Zack had not been home. However, moments later, he showed up with a serious leg injury, with his toe cut off. As Zack was rushed to the hospital, Anna blamed Max for the incident and the cops showed up at his place, dislocating his finger in the scuffle. When Max ended up in the same hospital as Zack, the latter spat out his own toe, confessing that he was hiding in the house after getting high and bit his own toe off.

After Anna was proven wrong once again, the media started to speculate about Max Cady's trial in Cape Fear, hinting that the couple sent him away in prison to kick-start their romance.

Max took over Anna's job in Cape Fear Episode 2

While Anna was busy with her son, she got tragic news about Byron in Cape Fear Episode 2. Turns out, the police found Byron and Bunny's bodies in their house, suggesting that Bunny killed her son before taking her own life.

The next morning, Noa informed Anna about her meeting with Ruben, one of their clients, who dropped his appeal for a pardon for a death sentence as he was not interested in living anymore. Since this would be bad for their firm, Noa wanted Anna to convince Ruben but she was busy with Zack. However, Max Cady not only found time to meet with Ruben but also convinced him to fight back, much to Noa's satisfaction. In the final moments of Cape Fear Episode 2, Anna arrived at her office, only to see Max in an interview with The Times, painting a sympathetic picture of himself, which helped their firm.

The premiere concluded with Max sitting in his new home with a dog, surrounded by his dead wife and the grown-up version of his unborn child.
