The mysterious visitor in Chicago Fire Season 14 Episode 11 was none other than Sam Carver. His reappearance was a true shock because at the end of Season 13, Carver had left Chicago to work in Denver. What was most painful part of his departure was the fact that he severed all communication with Violet Mikami, his ex-girlfriend, ostensibly to allow the two of them the room to grieve. No one imagined that he would be coming to 51 any time soon.

Why then did Carver go back to Chicago? Earlier on, before his visit, he had contacted Violet, telling her that he was on his way through town with members of his new Denver firehouse. The professional rationale was that he wanted to know more about the paramedic training program, which had been initiated by Violet and which he hoped to introduce back in Denver. Violet was unsure at first about encountering him again, considering the way the relationship had ended between them, but her friend and fellow worker, Lizzy Novak, urged her to act. She also had him stop by the firehouse.

On the arrival of Carver, the entire team went out to welcome him. He was dressed in his Denver Fire Department uniform, and it was obvious that he was in the town to work. He told everyone that everything was okay in his new city, but there was something under the carpet, and nobody could definitively discern what it was. Violet and Novak were called away to attend to an emergency before he could patch up with Violet.

The actual drama in Chicago Fire Season 14 Episode 11 began when Carver was able to sit with Violet, Novak, and the latest recruit to the team, Sal Vasquez. As Carver and Violet discussed the paramedic program, Carver got a feeling of the chemistry between Violet and Vasquez. The manner in which they were joking at each other, the good-natured banter, the smooth rapport between the two of them, it was all too clear to everyone present, particularly to Carver. Hence, it became very uncomfortable within a short time.

Carver then reunited with Stella Kidd, Violet, Vasquez, and Novak later in Molly’s bar. He spoke of making himself at home in his new house in Denver, but, as Vasquez walked off, Carver put direct questions to him concerning the newcomer. The crew informed him that Vasquez was adjusting well and that they were gradually breaking through his hard exterior. You would see the wheels turning in the head of Carver.

The strain reached its peak as Carver cornered Vasquez in Molly. He informed Vasquez that Violet deserves more than some hardcore guy. Not a man to back down, Vasquez inquired whether they had a problem. Carver was plainly still in love with Violet and threatened by the relationship that was developing between her and Vasquez. Here is a man who has relocated out of town and allegedly severed his ties so they could both move on, but he could not handle the idea of seeing her with a new man.

The following day, Vasquez inquired of Novak whether Carver would be coming by again. She said he was going to say goodbye, and Vasquez remarked that Carver appeared to have a hard time getting on with it. He was absolutely right. Their last good-bye came when Carver discovered Violet seeking forceps. She said that she was glad that things had gone well with him, and they hugged each other before he left.

However, Violet later confessed to Kidd and Novak that she had made attempts to avoid him because the thought of saying goodbye made her panic. She hated most of all that Carver appeared so cool and calm about all.
