NBC's hit medical drama, Chicago Med Season 11, is back with a fresh episode after its one-week hiatus. Episode 16 of Chicago Med Season 11, titled 'The Book of Charles,' follows Dr. Charles as he suffers a panic attack after an exhausting day at home and in the hospital. This episode puts Dr. Charles right at the center of the chaos.

Previously, we saw that Dr. Charles took up a volunteering position at a s**cide prevention helpline along with his duties at Gaffney. Meanwhile, Howie offered him to join his University as a professor. Howie believed that Dr. Charles should step away from his demanding hospital job and move to something that's less challenging.

Chicago Med Season 11 Episode 16 recap: Dr. Charles suffers a panic attack

Episode 16 of Chicago Med Season 11 begins with Dr. Charles suffering a panic attack in the hospital hall. His vision blurred out, and he heard a phone ringing in the background. The episode then rolls back to 24 hours. We see Dr. Charles at the suicide prevention helpline office as he gets a call from a person called Gio. Gio explains how he wants to end his life because he believes that he is responsible for his girlfriend's death. Charles tries to counsel him, but Gio's call gets disconnected. Charles tries to reconnect, but his call is redirected to voicemail.


Anna Charles returns

The next morning, Dr. Charles finds his daughter Anna waiting for him downstairs. As he proceeds to the kitchen to prepare breakfast, he stumbles upon her bag and finds a pair of men's boxers. When he questions Anna about it, she assures him that she is not seeing anyone.

When Charles returns to the hospital, he tells Goodwin about Gio and asks whether he should ask the supervisor to check up on him. Turns out, only the emergency service is allowed to take any action, and there's no follow-up usually. Goodwin tries to cheer Charles, telling him that he did his best.

Later, Ripley and Charles team up to treat a patient called Travis. Travis tells them that he hit his leg, but it turns out he might have been s*xually assaulted. When Charles asks him about his injury, he remains adamant that he fell and hurt his head. Ripley tries to counsel Travis. However, Travis isn't ready to hear anything from the doctor, and he asks them to leave.


A chaotic day at Gaffney for Dr. Charles

After Travis' meltdown, Lenox calls for Dr. Charles. Turns out, she needs him for consultation about her patient, Sage. Initially, Sage complained about abdominal pain and opted for surgery, but the test results showed that she was doing fine. Charles tries to make Sage understand that her mind might be messing with her. However, Sage takes offense and slams Charles for questioning her.

Later, in this episode of Chicago Med Season 11, Charles brings Sage's sister for some clarity. Turns out, they haven't been in contact for five years. However, her sister tells Charles how they grew up in foster care, and to seek attention, Sage often faked her injuries. Charles believes she has Munchausen syndrome. In between the chaos, Dr. Charles helps a young boy, Slater, who was deeply affected after his pet cat passed away. Charles also meets Atwater, who has some information on Gio. He found out that the phone was purchased from a 7-Eleven. He tried to track him down but failed.

Sage calls out Dr. Charles for being insensitive towards her. When Dr. Charles explains his diagnosis, she refuses to accept it. Charles also finds out about Lenox and Ripley's steamy secret affair. Anna rants about it to Charles when she finds out that Doris has sent her boyfriend a follow request. Charles admits that Doris was stalking them on his behalf. He was concerned for Anna. However, Anna wasn't happy about the snooping and stalking. She asked them to step back from her life.


Will Charles accept Howie's offer?

In Episode 16 of Chicago Med Season 11, Charles returns to Goodwin's office; however, his head is constantly playing Gio's conversation, and he hears a gunshot in his head. Goodwin informs him that Sage has filed an official complaint for verbally abusing her and accusing her of faking pain. Goodwin tells him that there will be an official process to sort it out. Goodwin worries for Charles. Charles tells him that he's thinking about accepting Howie's offer. He bolts out and returns to ED, where he finds Lenox preparing Sage for surgery, who has gulped down some drain cleaner. She screams at them, asking whether she is now sick enough. When Charles asks Lenox about Sage's condition, she tells him that it's quite critical.

As Charles leaves the ED, we are transported back to the beginning of the episode, where we found him stumbling through the hall. Charles has a panic attack, and he stumbles down. When he finally regains consciousness, he calls for help.
