Chicago Med Season 12 Episode 5 recap: Three burn victims are brought to Gaffney

Elsewhere, three burn victims are brought to the ED. Archer and Ripley team up to treat the burn patients. One of the women wakes up to explain that they started the fire to escape. Goodwin meets with Sgt. Trudy Platt, who explains that this might be connected to a kidnapping case. She worked on a case involving a missing girl named Missy who lived two blocks away from the bunker where three women were kept in horrible conditions. Wu interrupts Archer's surgery to tell him that her patient should receive treatment first since she has a better chance of survival.

Ripley also supports Wu; however, Archer isn't happy. Platt and Goodwin speak to one burn victim whose name is Joanna. Joanna reveals that the other two girls are named Beatrice and Isabel. According to Soaps.com, it is revealed that Beatrice set the fire so that they could escape. It turns out Max's secret Angel was Joanna. This led the doctors and Platt to connect the dots that Max's parents, Clark and Esther, were the suspected kidnappers. They tried to escape from the authorities but failed. Clark was arrested, and Esther was injured after she stepped in front of the car when she realized she was caught.

They found out that Clark was sexually abusing the women. Joanna told Dr. Charles that the one bed in their room was for Clark. Dr. Charles sat on the floor to make Joanna feel safe and comfortable. It was a heartbreaking moment when Dr. Charles realized that Joanna was Max's biological mother. Clark took him away from Joanna just days after he was born. Joanna tried to contact Max through the vents, which the child mistook for his secret Angel. Joanna went into withdrawal from the drugs Clark gave her to sedate her.

Platt interrogated Esther in the hospital. Esther claimed Joanna was bad. When Platt further checked on Esther, she found a birthmark behind Esther's ears, which confirmed that she was Missy.

What happened to the burn victims in Chicago Med Season 12 Episode 5?

In the end, Dr. Wu got the name of the drug out of Missy. Dr. Wu tried to emotionally manipulate her, and she was successful. However, Wu also reveals a personal experience: she was also an abuse victim.

Joanna spoke to Max through the hospital's speaker system. She saw him for the first time through a one-way mirror. She promised to be with him always.

Isabel reunited with her parents. Unfortunately, Beatrice, who started the fire, did not survive. Before she passed, Archer told her that Isabel and Joanna were safe. This scene then cut to a horrific scenario where Platt and Goodwin were surveying the tiny bunker where the women were held.
