What is Coldwater about?

Coldwater revolves around John and Fiona, a married couple whose lives are upended after John freezes during a brutal attack at a London playground. Shaken and desperate for a fresh start, they move their family to the seemingly peaceful Scottish village of Coldwater. John is a stay at home father battling an identity crisis, quickly bonds with his charismatic neighbour Tommy, a respected community figure married to local pastor Rebecca. Fiona, a successful former restaurateur turned writer, remains suspicious.

As unsettling events mount, from the death of the family cat to accusations and violent crimes, John becomes the focus of growing suspicion. Unbeknownst to him, Tommy is manipulating the village, planting evidence, and framing John while hiding trophies from past murders.

The cast of the show anchors the thrilling premise. Here's what you need to know about the stars leading the show, and where you have seen them before.

Lincoln's John is a stay at home father of two riddled with anxiety and quiet shame. He avoids confrontation at all costs, choosing escape over conflict whenever possible. In Coldwater, his instinct to retreat keeps landing him in trouble, deepening his frustration at being perceived as weak and constantly emasculated by the aggressive men he encounters.

You have definitely seen Andrew Lincoln before as he rose to global fame as Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead, a role he reprised in 2024’s The Ones Who Live. Earlier, he broke out in BBC’s This Life, led Channel 4’s Teachers, starred in Love Actually, Strike Back, Afterlife, and numerous British TV dramas.

Rebecca is Coldwater’s pastor in name only, openly admitting she does not believe in God. What she does believe in is community. Warm, approachable, and quietly observant, she takes comfort in being needed. Her devotion to her husband Tommy defines her life, with friendships and responsibilities always orbiting that central relationship.

Eve Myles is best known for playing Gwen Cooper in Torchwood, a role that earned her a BAFTA Cymru award. She also starred as Faith Howells in Keeping Faith, appeared in Broadchurch, Victoria, Merlin, Little Dorrit, and began her career in BBC Wales drama Belonging after graduating from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

Tommy is the show's unofficial alpha as a man who thrives on being admired. He is charismatic, unsettlingly funny, and quietly controlling. He welcomes John under his wing, though his fascination with serial killers and a carefully buried past suggest there is far more lurking beneath his friendly exterior.

Ewen Bremner is best known as Spud in Trainspotting and T2 Trainspotting. His career spans Black Hawk Down, Snatch, Pearl Harbor, Snowpiercer, Wonder Woman, Alien vs. Predator, and First Cow. On television, he has appeared in Our Flag Means Death, Strike Back, Spooks, Banished, and House of the Dragon.

Fiona is John's wife and the primary breadwinner of her family as a successful author. Although their relationship is strained, she tries her best to work on it. As the backbone of her family, she is the first one who grows suspicious of Coldwater and it's residents.

Indira Varma is widely known for roles in Rome, Torchwood, Luther, Paranoid and Game of Thrones, where she played Ellaria Sand. Her film debut came in Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love. She also voices The Bride in Creature Commandos and is an acclaimed stage actor, winning an Olivier Award for Present Laughter.

Cameron is the youngest child of Tommy and Rebecca and easily the sharpest observer in the room. Quiet, watchful, and emotionally perceptive, he notices things others miss. Fiercely protective of the people he loves, he carries unspoken feelings for Catriona and a maturity that feels slightly too heavy for his age.

Samuel Bottomley began acting as a child, debuting in Tyrannosaur. He is best known for Ackley Bridge, Ladhood, and Kiss Me First. His film work includes Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, Get Duked!, How to Have Sex, and The Last Rifleman, alongside major TV roles in Somewhere Boy and The Teacher.

Lois Chimimba as Catriona

Catriona is a warm, approachable presence in Coldwater, working between the local newsagent and the pub. Her friendliness often gets mistaken for softness, but she is perceptive and street smart. Well liked across the community, she moves easily between different social circles, even as others quietly underestimate her.

Chimimba is known for Trust Me, A Discovery of Witches, and The One. She appeared in Doctor Who as Mabli, starred in Vigil, Sex Education, and Shetland.

Moira-Jane is the estranged eldest child of Tommy and Rebecca, long removed from family life in Coldwater.

Abigail Lawrie is known for her Scottish BAFTA winning role on Tin Star, where she starred for three seasons. She made her screen debut in The Casual Vacancy and later appeared in Murdered for Being Different, Our Ladies, Strike, No Escape, and Good Omens, alongside acclaimed stage work in London theatre.
