Criminal, the upcoming Prime Video series, will mark the return of Charlie Hunnam. Charlie Hunnam has previously featured in Sons of Anarchy, the FX show where he played Jax Teller.

Hunnam's upcoming title will take inspiration from the popular graphic novel series of the same name. The book series is created by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips. The release date for the show's debut on Amazon's crime thriller slate is yet to be announced.

Prime Video is increasing its already expansive crime thriller titles with Criminal. It already boasts thrilling crime sagas like Reacher, Bosch, Jack Ryan, and The Night Manager.

The latest title will place Charlie Hunnam in the lead role, propelling the show to become one of the platform’s biggest shows with its grounded storytelling. The character-driven approach ensures audience engagement. The date of release is expected sometime around 2026, bringing Hunnam back to the TV screen after a long pause.

The last time Hunnam appeared in a highly charged and popular title was in Sons of Anarchy. When it ended, Hunnam took a break from long-form format for several years.

His return was marked by TV+’s Shantaram and then via Netflix’s Monster: The Ed Gein Story. With Prime Video's upcoming title, he once again steps into TV territory.

What makes the title particularly important for him is that it echoes familiar themes while taking them in a very different direction. Hunnam plays Leo Patterson, the comic's famous professional thief, who has to navigate a highly dangerous criminal world.

Pop culture imagination is saturated by violent villains. But this character is different in that it avoids violence. In the comics, other criminals mock him for playing it safe and retreating when situations turn deadly.

The contrast between Leo’s circumstances brings emotional depth and separates him from Hunnam’s earlier tough-guy roles. Fans of the comics would identify the most important character arcs: namely, “Coward” and “Lawless.”

“Coward” follows Leo as a heist collapses and leaves him dealing with the consequences of his choices while trying to stay alive. The story shifts to “Lawless” and then explores Tracy Lawless.

Here, the violent enforcer, who returns home searching for answers and revenge, is explored. Together, these stories introduce viewers to a morally grey world that is nuanced and has more to offer than just bloodlust.

The series includes several talents in its supporting cast. Emilia Clarke will be joining the show alongside Gus Halper and Luke Evans. Viewers will also see John Hawkes and Taylor Sele in key roles.

One of the project’s biggest strengths is the involvement of Ed Brubaker, who serves as co-showrunner. His presence suggests the adaptation will stay close to the tone, themes, and realism that made the comics so highly regarded.
