Debra Melo’s case has been one of the most mysterious disappearances that Dateline has brought to the forefront. Melo was just 30 years old when she disappeared, leaving her family in complete disarray. Her case received immense public attention. On June 20, 2000, Debra Melo was in the car with her husband, Luis Melo, when she had a fight with him.

Deputy Chief Jason Mohan spoke to Dateline about the conversation they had with Debra’s husband regarding the fight she had, which caused her to get out of the car in the middle of the road. Luis drove off after dropping Debra. However, he returned after some time. He searched for Debra but was unable to locate her. Debra has not been found yet, and the search still continues. Here are further details of the Debra Melo case explored by Dateline.

Dateline unveils details of Debra Melo’s mysterious disappearance

1) Details of Debra Melo’s disappearance

On the day of Debra’s mysterious disappearance, she went to a dermatologist with Luis, where she bought a $400 skin cream. After the couple left the dermatologist, they had a fight, according to Luis. After leaving the car, she was nowhere to be found. Jason Mohan spoke to Dateline and noted that the information regarding the fight is “solely” from the words of Luis.

He also added that this information “cannot be independently confirmed." While speaking about her sister’s disappearance, Patricia also told Dateline that she did not find out about Debra’s disappearance until Debra’s daughter called her the next day to inform her that her mother had not returned home.

2) Start of investigation

Dateline further explored the details of Debra Melo’s case. Soon after Debra’s sister, Patricia, found out about the situation, she started by calling Luis to find out more. Soon, the search for Debra began with the help of friends and family.

Patricia tried to look for information from the hospitals in the surrounding area. Eventually, on June 21, 2000, Debra was reported to be missing, which led to the start of the investigation. Debra’s case began to be handled by both Taunton and Weymouth police stations.

3) Missing items in the case

The investigation led to the revelation that there were several missing items in the case. Jason Mohan spoke to Dateline, noting that even though the $400 cream was found in the car, several other items were missing. Some of the items that were missing included Debra’s gold bracelet, a pinky ring that had a green stone, Debra’s pocketbook, etc.

The case pointed in the direction of Debra’s husband. Debra’s husband, Luis, had to go through two polygraph tests during the investigation. However, he failed both tests, further complicating the case. Debra’s sister, Patricia, also spoke to Dateline regarding the relationship that Debra had with Luis.

4) Lack of witnesses and Luis’ behavior

Jason Mohan said in the interview that though the search for Debra gained momentum, there was no positive direction in the case. The investigators applied several methods to find clues that could help them solve the case. However, they were not able to find anything. The investigators also received a tip in 2017. After looking into the tip, it led to a dead end.

There was a “lack of physical evidence,” which became the “biggest obstacle” for Debra Melo’s case. As it has already been several years, finding “new witnesses” has also become a challenge. Patricia also pointed out that after getting married to Luis, Debra’s behavior changed, as Debra was not “able to talk”. Luis would “listen” to Debra’s conversations.

5) Search for Debra continues

Even though several years have passed, the investigation into Debra’s case continues even today. Jason Mohan has urged anyone with information related to the case to come forward so that her case can be solved.

The investigators are also searching for individuals whom they were not able to “identify in 2000, specifically people who worked with both Luis and Debra Melo”.
