As Dateline shared on Facebook, on October 5, 2026, Ohio music pastor, Caleb Flynn, who was a contestant on American Idol, has been sentenced to life in prison without parole for murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn. Caleb was charged with the murder of his 37-year-old wife, Ashley, who passed away on February 16, 2026, in their home in Tipp City, Ohio.
Caleb's trial began on September 17, 2026. On September 29, 2026, the jury declared him guilty of aggravated murder, felonious assault, and tampering with evidence, among other charges. Here's everything you need to know about the brutal case.
Dateline: Caleb Flynn shot his wife but pretended she was killed by an intruder
As the NBC News article posted by Dateline revealed, Caleb Flynn made a 911 call on the night of February 16, 2026, claiming that his wife, Ashley Flynn, had been shot in the head by an intruder who had entered through the garage. However, no proof of a break-in was found. Moreover, the family has two dogs, and strangely, neither of them barked at anyone unknown entering the house.
There were other inconsistencies between what Caleb claimed had happened and the actual evidence. For instance, Caleb had told the investigators that he was asleep in his daughters' bedroom when he was woken up by gunshots from what he thought was a home invasion. However, his Apple Watch data said otherwise.
The Apple Watch logged significant movement during the exact timeframe Caleb claimed to be asleep. Specifically, it recorded 105 steps at 2:18 am, alongside several other small bursts of movement earlier in the morning (such as steps at 1:19 am, 1:22 am, and 1:52 am).
As the NBC News article posted by Dateline reports, Caleb was thus arrested and charged with aggravated murder, among other charges. He faced trial from September 17, 2026, to September 29, 2026, and received his sentence on October 5, 2026.
During the trial, the prosecutors proved that in February 2026, Flynn shot his 37-year-old wife twice in the back of the head while she was sleeping in their home. He then staged the scene to look like a home invasion and called emergency services to claim that an intruder was responsible for his wife's death.
Moreover, as the article posted by Dateline reveals, the prosecutors also established that Caleb had a nearly two-year affair with a 24-year-old church intern, Alleigha Botner. During the trial, Botner testified, and prosecutors revealed thousands of text messages exchanged between the two, including ones where Flynn had expressed his hatred for his wife.
The prosecutors established that Caleb killed Ashley because he wanted to get out of their marriage without any issues and then marry Alleigha. Moreover, killing Ashley meant not having to fight her for the custody of their two daughters. On September 29, 2026, the jury found Caleb Flynn guilty of all charges.
According to the NBC News article posted by Dateline, on October 5, 2026, Caleb Flynn was sentenced to life in prison without parole for aggravated murder, 9 years for three counts of tampering with evidence, and 7 years for firearm specifications/enhancements. Caleb's sentences for multiple counts will run consecutively, requiring him to serve a combined 16 years before the life sentence takes effect.
Additionally, Judge Jeannine Pratt ordered Flynn to pay $20,000 in restitution to his late wife’s parents to cover future funeral expenses. According to the NBC News article posted by Dateline, before sentencing Flynn, Judge Pratt said:
“The layers of deceit, manipulation and cruelty are hard to fathom... ...And you used your faith to manipulate the lives of others.”
After getting sentenced, Flynn read out a statement he had written addressed to his and Ashley's family. The statement reads:
“I... loved her. She was my wife. She was beautiful and amazing in countless ways."
He continued:
"I will continue to fight for my innocence as long as the Lord allows me to, since I did not kill my wife.”
According to the NBC News article posted by Dateline, while Caleb's two daughters Alyssa and Ava, aged 12 and 10, respectively, weren't present at court, their letters to their father were read out by family members. Both daughters are heartbroken by their father's actions and shocked by the fact that he chose a different woman over their mother.
Caleb Flynn's time in prison will begin at the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.
