Dateline: Inside the Llama Lady's brutal murder case that remains unsolved

With at least 10 persons of interest in the Llama Lady’s case, the case still remains open even today. The incident took place on May 5, 2007. However, despite the evidence that was collected related to the case, this evidence has not yet brought forth any significant progress in the case.

Llama Lady, aka Eveline Ashbaugh, was a 60-year-old woman who was found brutally stabbed to death in her bedroom. Dateline unveils the details of the case and the progress the investigation has made almost 20 years later.

On May 5, 2007, when the Llama Lady, aka Eveline Ashbaugh’s farmhand, could not find his boss, he promptly dialed 911. After the investigators arrived at the location, Ashbaugh’s body was initially nowhere to be found.

Detective Sergeant Joshua Clarke, in an interview with Dateline, revealed that Ashbaugh’s body was found after the investigators searched her house for the second time. She was found dead with multiple stab wounds on her body.

Beginning of the investigation of the Llama Lady’s murder case

While speaking to Dateline, Clarke further explores the details regarding Eveline Ashbaugh’s case. The Llama Lady was the owner of a farm where she had “about 30 to 40 llamas”. The investigation revealed that she was not in any relationship at the time of her murder.

She was also divorced. According to her friends, Eveline Ashbaugh was “kinda brusque and eccentric,” which increased the number of persons of interest in her case. The time of Ashbaugh’s murder was around 2 to 4 am on May 5, 2007.

Details of Llama Lady’s crime scene

While speaking to Dateline, Detective Sergeant Joshua Clarke further reveals how her case “appears to be a crime of passion,” as the multiple stab wounds that were found on her body were “certainly overkill”. Ashbaugh’s body was also covered with several items, such as “dresser drawers, a cloth, and a laundry basket”. There was also a ladder, which was placed outside her house leading to her room on the second floor. However, investigators pointed out that it was staged to mislead the investigators.

Clarke also added in his interview with Dateline that Eveline Ashbaugh was killed by someone who “had come in through her bedroom door”. Besides the ladder, a purse was also found in her vehicle, which was also staged, according to the investigators. Clarke notes that killing Eveline was the “primary reason” for the killer.

Possibility of the involvement of multiple killers in the Llama Lady case

In the Dateline interview, Clarke has also added that investigations related to the case have pointed to the possibility of “multiple people” being involved in the murder. Clarke notes that the murder was done by someone who “would have known the residence” and also would have been aware of the routine she followed.

Though the chances of a former romantic partner killing Ashbaugh were low, investigators have noted that there was “some kind of romantic slight”. A polygraph test was also done. However, it did not lead to any progress in the case. As the murder weapon was not found, it created yet another hindrance in the path of solving the case.

Present situation of the case

In the interview with Dateline, Clarke notes that the case is still open today even though they do not have any “new kind of movement” on the case. The investigators are going through the “old information” that is present in this almost twenty-year-old case. They are also trying to get “anything different," which might lead to a positive direction.

Clarke believes that there is “somebody out there” who might know some details of this case and might be able to provide insights. He has urged them to come forward to help unravel the “mysteries” behind the case.
