According to the couple’s acquaintances, they had a perfect life. However, right after Simeonette Mapes-Crupi’s tragic death on July 5, 2012, complicated details of their relationship began to be unveiled. During the questioning, Simeonette’s husband, Jonathan, noted that he was busy running some errands after leaving their Staten Island home at 7:30 on the day of the incident.

After he returned home, he found Simeonette’s dead body in a “giant puddle of blood”. According to the detective investigating the case, it is revealed that the sheer number of stab wounds on Simeonette Mapes-Crupi’s body denoted that the killer intended to make sure that “she is, in fact, dead”.

Their house being in complete disarray also raised further suspicions. In Secrets of the Sliding Door, it is also revealed that the sliding glass back door of their house was left open.

Secrets of the Sliding Door depicts how the Detectives began to investigate Jonathan Crupi’s alibi

In Secrets of the Sliding Door, it is revealed that though Jonathan Crupi gave complete details of his whereabouts during the time of the murder of his wife, the detectives of the case retraced his alibi two days after Simeonette’s murder. After further investigation, it is revealed that the DNA which was found on the glass sliding back door of their house had Jonathan’s DNA along with another woman’s.

However, during the questioning, Jonathan told the detectives that the door was locked before he left the house in the morning of the incident. On July 11, it was revealed that Jonathan was given the job at the school after she begged them.

The supplies for which Jonathan went out, as he had denoted to the detectives, were also revealed to be a lie, as the principal of the school noted that the necessary materials were already present.

Details of the woman’s DNA are revealed in Secrets of the Sliding Door

After the investigators began to investigate both Jonathan's and Simeonette’s laptops, further details regarding the case began to come to light. Through further investigation of Simeonette’s phone, a woman’s number was found. Simeonette had saved the number as “woman,” which further raised suspicions. On August 15, “woman,” who is actually a sex worker named “Miss Pumpkin,” was interviewed for the case.

She revealed many gruelling details related to Jonathan. Secrets of the Sliding Door reveals that Miss Pumpkin had a relationship with Jonathan for years. On July 5, the day of Simeonette’s death, Jonathan also went to visit Miss Pumpkin. The DNA which was found on the glass sliding back door was revealed to be Miss Pumpkin’s. Further investigation of Jonathan’s computers revealed that he often visited escort sites and porn sites.

He also used money so that he could fund these activities. The investigators revealed that the “bills and the food” for the family came from Simeonette while Jonathan wasted his money on “sneakers and his extramarital affairs”.

Secrets of the Sliding Door revealed the true situation of Jonathan and Simeonette’s marriage

After finding the details of Miss Pumpkin in Simeonette’s phone, the investigators understood that she might have found out the truth about Jonathan’s actions.

It is also revealed that, unlike the other teachers of their school, Jonathan was the only one who did not receive a master’s degree and was given an ultimatum by the principal of the school.

Simeonette’s mother also unveiled that she was about to confront Jonathan for his actions and had also promised to leave him.

Secrets of the Sliding Door unveils how Jonathan was arrested for his crimes

Though it could be understood that Jonathan was involved in Simeonette’s murder, the investigators did not have enough evidence to prove it.

Things took a turn when it was revealed by the medical examiner that Simeonette died before 7:30 am. Jonathan’s computer search history also involved searches about the process to slit throats and the process to clean up a crime scene.

Finally, on November 13, 2012, months after Simeonette’s tragic death, Jonathan was arrested. Three years later, he went to trial and was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison.
