Dateline will be returning to the TV screens this week with the latest episode, "Temptation", dropping tomorrow. For those who don't know, the upcoming episode is about the murders of Christine Banfield and Joseph Ryan, also referred to as the au pair murders. The crime occurred three years ago in February 2023, which ended with the deaths of 39-year-old Joseph Ryan and 37-year-old Christine Banfield.Christine's husband, Brendan Banfield, and the Banfield family Au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, were held responsible for the deaths. The duo had planned this crime to make it look like a home invasion gone sideways. View this post on Instagram Instagram PostBrendan and Juliana began an affair in 2022, and over the course of their affair, he expressed a desire to leave Christine, without suffering any financial consequence or a custody battle for their child. This is why they came up with this devious plan. For the first step of the plan, Brendan created an account under Christine's name on an NSFW site.Joseph Ryan was in no way connected to the Banfields in any way, but he connected with the account he believed to be Christine's profile. There, Brendan lured Joseph under the pretense of a risque intimate session. On February 24, 2023, Brendan stabbed his wife and also shot Ryan. Brendan, who is an IRS agent, told the police that Ryan broke into their house and stabbed Christine.However, the investigators did not find any signs of forced entry, and they found Brendan and Christine's daughter unharmed in the basement. Juliana was arrested in October 2023 under the charges of firearm offenses and second-degree murder. The court also indicted Brendan Banfield almost a year later for his role in the deaths of Christine and Joseph.The two were finally sentenced this February. Judge Penney Azcarate sentenced Juliana Peres Magalhães to ten years in prison, and two years suspended. Peres Magalhães finally apologized to Christine and Joseph's families:“I lost myself in a relationship, leaving my morals and values behind. I understand that I am to blame, and I am truly sorry for the pain I caused. I hope someday I can be forgiven, as I hope to be able to forgive myself."Steve Descano, Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney, released a statement regarding Peres Magalhães' testimony against Brendan Banfield:“Today’s hearing was dedicated specifically to Joe, a beloved son, nephew, and grandson, who was a perfect stranger to Magalhães and Brendan Banfield and tragically ensnared in their plot.
