Dateline: The Butterfly revisits the shocking disappearance and murder of a 21-year-old art student, Katelyn Markham, who lived in Fairfield, Ohio. She was happily engaged to John Carter, but she suddenly went missing from her Dorshire Drive townhouse only a few weeks away from finishing her college graduation.
Katelyn was adopted by her parents, Dave and Sherri. She was known for her strong artistic skill and uplifting personality. She met John in high school, and both fell in love quickly. After 5 years of their relationship, John proposed to her with a beautiful ring, and she accepted his proposal.
Katelyn was preparing for her exams, but in her mind she made a plan to move with John to Colorado after completing her graduation at the Art Institute of Ohio, Cincinnati. However, she suddenly vanished without any explanation before receiving her degree.

August 14, 2011
Katelyn's fiance John Carter, reported her missing to the police and said that he had last seen her inside her Dorshire Drive townhouse at midnight. Carter further explained that they had exchanged a few text messages, but by the next morning, she had stopped replying.
August 15, 2011
The Butterfly showed that Katelyn failed to come to her job at David's Bridal. Later that evening, Carter reported that he went to her house and noticed her car and dog but didn't see her or her cellphone. After hearing his report, police officers and volunteers started searching for her, and the search continued for several months.
April 2013
On April 7, the officials found skeletal remains near a creek in a wooded area in Cedar Grove, Indiana. Three days later, confirmations came from the police that those remains were Katelyn's. She was identified through a comparison of her dental records, but the cause of death could not be determined from the condition of the remains.
August 2013
The Butterfly revealed that on August 13, the Franklin County coroner Wanda Lee classified Katelyn's death as a homicide even though the exact cause of death could not be determined from the remains. On August 25, the family of the victim organized the funeral service at the Fairfield High School Auditorium.
April 2014
According to Fairfield Police, a new tip was received from what they described as a validated source. Shortly afterwards, more of Katelyn's remains were found in the same Cedar Grove area.
2015
The Butterfly episode highlighted that Katelyn's father, Dave Markham, successfully convinced the Butler County Sheriff's Office to reopen the investigation. After several months of work, the department announced that they had identified a suspect in her death, but the collected evidence was not strong enough to proceed with the case.
January 2017
A private investigator who was hired to investigate Katelyn's case shared his findings through a podcast called Gone at 21. In that podcast, J. Ryan Green criticized officials in Fairfield and Butler County for moving too slowly with the case.
February 17, 2023
The Butterfly also revealed the announcement made by Butler County about the arrest of Jonathan Palmerton, the friend of Carter. Jonathan was faced with a perjury charge for allegedly lying during the investigation.
March 2023
On March 22, John Carter was arrested and charged with the murder of Katelyn Markham. On March 27, Carter was formally put on trial on a murder charge in Butler County Common Pleas Court.
April 2023
Carter paid a $1 million bond, which allowed him to return home under GPS monitoring while awaiting trial. Soon after, officials unsealed search warrants that revealed circumstantial evidence pointing toward Carter, including computer data, cellphone records, and witness statements.
June 7, 2024
A few weeks before his trial, Carter admitted that he was responsible for Katelyn's death. He pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, which led to the dismissal of the two murder charges against him.
July 18, 2024
Dateline: The Butterfly revealed that Carter was sentenced to three years in prison, which was the maximum punishment allowed under his plea deal. After serving 14 months, he requested an early release, but a Butler County judge officially rejected his plea.
