Details of the day of the murder unfolded in Dateline: The Night Time Stopped

In this Dateline episode, it is revealed that Colin Strickland revealed that after the swim with Moriah Wilson, the two of them went for dinner. He then dropped Wilson off at her friend’s house; however, he did not enter the house.

On May 11, around 10 PM CT, the police arrived at the house and found Moriah Wilson’s body strewn with gunshot wounds. The police also noted that the manner of the crime did not appear to be a “random act”.

The official cause of Wilson’s death was announced on May 12 to be from gunshot wounds.

Kaitlin Marie Armstrong’s involvement was explored in Dateline’s The Night Time Stopped episode

Investigation started, and the police were able to see a black 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee through the CCTV footage around 8:57 PM near Wilson’s house on the day of her murder.

The car was similar to the one owned by Kaitlin Marie Armstrong. On May 12, further investigation in Armstrong and Strickland’s house was conducted, where a 9mm handgun was found.

The shell casings that were found at the murder scene matched the gun found in Armstrong’s house. On May 13, Armstrong also sold the Jeep, which she had owned at a car dealership.

Suspicions rise against Kaitlin Marie Armstrong

It is revealed in the Dateline episode that even though Kaitlin Marie Armstrong was arrested on May 12 for a separate misdemeanour case, she was released soon after. However, on May 14, Armstrong left for New York. Later on May 18, she flew to San Jose, Costa Rica, after purchasing a ticket using her sister’s name.

Following this incident, on May 20, Armstrong was put on a “wanted” poster by the Austin police so that they could apprehend her. On the other hand, Armstrong was spending her time at a beach town in Santa Teresa and introduced herself as Ari.

This Dateline episode also unveils the extent to which Armstrong went to protect herself from getting caught. To completely change her face so that she cannot be recognised, Armstrong spent over $6000 on plastic surgery.

U.S. Marshals had already begun searching for Kaitlin Armstrong and had interviewed many people so that her location could be found. On June 23, more than a month after the murder, Armstrong was arrested in Costa Rica.

One of the investigators noted that initially they were not able to recognise Armstrong, as she had a “bandage on her nose and her lips were a bit swollen”. Her hair was also “a little bit lighter”.

She was recognised and then taken to the local jail and then back to Texas.

Dateline unveils the final verdict of Moriah Wilson’s murder

This episode of Dateline also depicted that while Armstrong was being taken for a doctor’s appointment on October 11, she tried to escape, causing the officers to go on a foot chase for a mile before she was caught. Her trial started on November 1.

Nicole Mertz, one of Armstrong’s friends, testified against her, noting that Armstrong was angry because Wilson arrived at a gathering. She also told Nicole Mertz that if Colin Strickland started to date anyone else, she “would kill her”. There was a “brief romantic relationship” between Strickland and Wilson, according to Strickland.

He was separated from Armstrong during this period. After Strickland reconciled with Armstrong, he maintained a “platonic and professional” relationship with Wilson. Before the murder, Armstrong had also tried to contact Wilson and warned her to “stay away” from Colin Strickland. Armstrong was found guilty on November 16 and was given 90 years in prison for first-degree murder.
