Netflix released Death of the Pastor's Wife in August 2026, and it brought notable attention to the Mica Miller case. However, the same case looks very different through the eyes of someone who knew Mica long before her marriage to pastor John Paul "JP" Miller.
We're talking about Alexx Altman-Devilbiss, who met Mica Miller when they were teenagers at Solid Rock Church. To Alexx, Mica wasn't someone who would marry a pastor, and later, that marriage and her death would gain public attention.
Mica was almost four years younger than Alexx, but they were really close to each other, and then she started noticing Mica's growing closeness with pastor John Paul "JP" Miller. Alexx thought it was just a close connection, but Mica ended up having an affair with her pastor.
All she knew was that her friend was a young woman who loved music, church, and spending time with the people around her. In the latest episode of Criminally Obsessed, Alexx remembers Mica as a warm and kind young woman who loved everyone around her.
Alexx said:
"She just always had a big heart, very bubbly, um, very excited about being in church and worship, and so yeah, that's just who she was as a person. She always had a really big heart."
The close friend of the Death of the Pastor's Wife subject also explained how much Mica loved leading worshipers, as it made her feel really comfortable.

Death of the Pastor's Wife: Alexx remembers the Mica she knew before the affair
Alexx met Mica after joining Solid Rock Church in 2010. Alexx was about 19, and Mica was still in high school, several years younger than her.
The two became friends, and Alexx also became close to Mica's first husband, Jeremy. One thing to note is that JP Miller was the one who officiated the wedding of Mica and Jeremy.
Alexx then remembers the young couple's relationship as a happy part of their shared church life. Mica was deeply involved in music and worship. Alexx says she could see how much performing meant to her, recalling:
"She loved being on stage, and you could tell when she sang. That was like her happy place."
Alexx further explained that after Mica and Jeremy married, she noticed JP spending more time with them. The subject of Death of the Pastor's Wife, Mica, eventually started assisting JP and helping with his children.
The close friend also added that things didn't change suddenly in their lives. Instead, JP and Mica were slowly getting closer and closer to each other.
And now that Mica is no more, Alexx sees those moments very differently and also explained that she never imagined Mica would start an affair with the pastor.
The affair became public, and Alexx says the church turned its anger toward Mica
The close friend of the subject of Death of the Pastor's Wife, Alexx, later revealed in the same interview that she did not personally discover the affair. She says her husband learned about it from a church elder and then told her that JP and Mica had been involved.
She immediately contacted Mica because she wanted to hear the truth directly from her friend rather than rely on what other people were saying. Their conversation was emotional.
Alexx says Mica cried, expressed regret, and treated the incident as something she did not expect to become a relationship. The two were caught when JP's first wife, Ally, reportedly found messages between JP and Mica in which they expressed their love for each other.
JP subsequently sent an apology to the church, and there was discussion about him stepping away from preaching. Alexx says he ultimately continued in his role, and people can explore more about their bond in Death of the Pastor's Wife on Netflix.
What stayed with Alexx was the reaction around them. She remembers people being particularly angry with Mica and says she found it strange that she did not see the same level of anger directed toward JP. She said:
"People were very angry with her, and I thought it was weird because no one seemed to be angry with JP."
She continued:
"And not a lot of people that I can remember left the church right away. It was very odd to me that people were willing to follow a pastor that does that."
She and her husband eventually decided to leave Solid Rock because they did not want to remain in an environment that felt so negative and conflicted for them.
Alexx says she left before Mica and JP's relationship developed further. She later learned that JP continued pursuing Mica and that the two eventually married.
Death of the Pastor's Wife subject Mica Miller's death left Alexx with questions she still cannot answer

Years after leaving the church, Alexx had lost touch with Mica. When her husband told her that Mica had died, Alexx initially thought an accident might have happened.
She says she never imagined Mica would go to an isolated area and die there. Alexx said:
"Never ever would I have thought like she would have done that and gone to, like, this swamp area and decided to commit suicide. Like, it just never would have dawned on me that she would do that."
She still has questions about the circumstances. At the same time, Alexx does not claim to know that someone killed Mica or that another person was present.
She said that she could never imagine Mica taking her own life. However, Alexx also makes clear that she cannot know what Mica was thinking because they were no longer close.
The 911 call has been particularly difficult for her. Alexx listened to only the beginning because hearing Mica's distressed voice, parts of which are also shown in Death of the Pastor's Wife, felt completely different from the woman she remembered. She said:
"That's not the Mica that I know."
Alexx also said that watching Death of the Pastor's Wife was painful, especially the material concerning Mica's voice and singing. She remembered music as such an important part of Mica's identity that seeing it affected in the documentary was deeply upsetting.
Alexx does not ignore Mica's own mistakes. She openly acknowledges the affair but separates that from what she believes Mica later experienced. If she could speak to Mica again, Alexx says she would tell her that she loved her regardless of everything that happened.
