Diego Luna gets candid about Andor, Hollywood and why films ‘only seek to please’ don’t last

Diego Luna brought life to the titular character of the Star Wars spin-off series Andor, after which he quickly gained an immense positive response from viewers for his authentic performance in the series. Luna now takes the helm as the director of Ashes, which explores the story of a young woman whose life takes a turn after she has to leave Mexico so that she can meet her mother.

In a recent interview with Variety, Luna opens up about his performance in Andor and dives deep into the world of entertainment.

In the interview, Diego Luna notes that Andor has been a significant turning point for him and adds that it is something that is “unlikely” to happen to him again. He notes that even though the challenges that come up when filming a project are similar whether it is a “massive production or a smaller one”, there are certain differences in Andor’s case.

According to him, Star Wars is a “different story” and has a feeling of being “already there”. There is also a “level of attention” that comes with “affection” and a “sense of companionship” as Star Wars “spans generations”. Hence, for him, the experience of being able to be a part of the franchise through Andor by taking on the titular character is something that he “can’t compare to anything else”.

In the interview, Diego Luna gets candid about how films often fail to leave an impact if they “only seek to please”. He continues that focusing on whether the films are able to “champion a specific point of view” is a crucial driving factor in leaving an impact. The films that “lack that vision” eventually get “forgotten very quickly”.

However, he does not want his newest project, Ashes, to follow this path. Taking inspiration from Brenda Navarro’s novel, the storyline of Ashes brings life to Lucila’s story. Lucila’s relationship with her mother plays a significant role in the storyline. Lucila and her brother were abandoned by their mother when she left them to find better job opportunities in the city.

The movie will explore Lucila’s journey as she navigates through these complex emotions, which have been propelled by her past. In another interview with Variety, Diego Luna spoke about the prejudice immigrants often face in the present scenario. Luna notes that this aspect arises from “ignorance and selfishness”. It is also “related” to the fear of “what you have being taken away from you”.

Luna also connects the storyline of the movie to his personal struggles related to his mother’s death. In the interview, he adds that he is strongly aware of the “idea of not having” a mother figure, which is also prevalent in Ashes.

Besides Andor, some of Diego Luna’s other notable projects that can also be added to your watchlist are Kiss of the Spider Woman, Narcos: Mexico, Wander Darkly, etc. Luna has also taken on several voice acting roles in projects such as Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans, Maya and the Three, etc. He is also set to take on a significant role in the upcoming movie, Tangled, which is a live-action adaptation of the very successful animated movie of the same name.
