According to an exclusive report by Variety, Disney+ has canceled Wonder Man, despite the 17th television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe earning a Season 2 renewal, two months after its debut. The eight-episode series, which debuted on Disney+ in January 2026, was announced to return for another outing. However, according to recent reports, a writers' room for the sophomore season was never established and the series' writers were released to pursue other opportunities.Wonder Man stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams, an aspiring Hollywood actor with ionic energy-based superpowers, who is banned from working in the Industry by the Doorman Clause. With a 91% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Wonder Man debuted at No. 8 on Disney+'s streaming top 10 originals chart in the first week. However, the series struggled to maintain its position and fell off the chart in the following week, which might have forced the network to rethink its decision to renew it for another season.Additionally, Abdul-Mateen earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a comedy series, making him the first and only live-action actor to bag an Emmy nod for both Marvel and DC, following his win (for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie) for his work in DC's Watchmen (where he played Cal Abar / Doctor Manhattan).Abdul-Mateen and Kingsley were especially praised for their performance in Wonder Man. Simon and Trevor's unlikely friendship paves the way for their life-changing roles in director Von Kovak's titular film, offering an intriguing peek behind the scenes of the entertainment industry. In addition to Abdul-Mateen and Kingsley, the series stars X Mayo, Zlatko Burić, Arian Moayed, Joe Pantoliano, Byron Bowers and Josh Gad.Yahya Abdul-Mateen expressed his gratitude to fans View this post on Instagram Instagram PostFollowing Wonder Man's cancellation, Abdul-Mateen took to social media to close the chapter on Simon Williams (for now). The actor thanked his fans, who watched, enjoyed and shared his project with others. Abdul-Mateen continued thanking his fans in the post:“The show worked. And that’s my favorite thing about it...I can see in the messages I get saying how the show reminded some of you not to give up, and I feel it in the genuine love shared when I bump into some of you all during the day...Thank you for watching… And uhh… See you at the EMMYS.”While the show will not return for another season on Disney+, it established Yahya Abdul-Mateen and Ben Kingsley's respective characters in the MCU, who could certainly appear in other MCU projects. The prospect of Wonder Man returning for Season 2 felt too good to be true, especially since the majority of live-action MCU shows on Disney+ have been one-season stories, namely WandaVision, Hawkeye, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The Tom Hiddleston-starring Loki is an exception, which returned for another season. While WandaVision also aired for one season, it led to two spin-offs, namely Agatha All Along and the currently in production series Vision Quest.Wonder Man Season 1 is streaming on Disney+.For the latest scoops on your favorite TV shows and movies, follow SoapCentral.
