During the training session, things take a turn when two soldiers get heavily injured. Ji-ui arrives right away to help the two soldiers and promptly takes action. He explains the details of the injury and begins the treatment.It is then revealed that Ji-ui is a public health doctor and is serving a three-year term in medically underserved areas instead of the regular military service. Doctor on the Edge Episode 1 continues with Do Ji-ui doing an operation on the injured soldier, depicting his skills. After the operation is complete, the soldier appreciates Ji-ui for his help.After completing the operation, Ji-ui begins to speak with the other soldiers regarding their application. Ji-ui does not want to go to an island; however, in the end, his luck does not support him. He ends up at the Yeopoong Marine Transport for his ferry as he indeed gets enlisted on an island.Right at the moment he is about to board the ferry, he gets a call from Gangseok, who urges him not to take the medicine, as it has many side effects. While he is talking to Gangseok, a woman arrives speaking on the phone.The conversation that the woman is having is also similar to that of Ji-ui, which draws his attention. Both Ji-ui and the woman board the ferry as the captain announces that the ship will leave for Pyeondongdo soon. Doctor on the Edge Episode 1 continues with Ji-ui taking the medicine, thinking that nothing is going to happen. However, things take a turn when Ji-ui sees that the woman he met earlier jumps out of the ship.He jumps right after the woman so that he can save her. The moment he jumps into the water, he realizes that it was all a hallucination. He wakes up to find that he is in the public health center of the island. A staff member from the health center tells him the details of the situation. Ji-ui is first introduced to Yong Jucheon. Yong Jucheon is enthusiastic about Ji-ui’s arrival at the health center and asks him to give him his phone number.A clinic staff member then shows Ji-ui his office and speaks about the health issues that the patients of the area have. Doctor on the Edge Episode 1 continues with Ji-ui coming across yet another complication when he finds that his luggage has been exchanged with someone else. Ji-ui then goes to the city hall to solve the issue.After finding out the address of the woman with whom his luggage has been exchanged, things take yet another hilarious turn when he gets chased by a dog. It is revealed that the woman’s name is Ha-ri. The two of them then exchange their luggage. Unlike Ji-ui, who is extremely scared of the centipede that crawls out of Ha-ri’s luggage, she is calm and composed. Ha-ri also tells Ji-ui not to take the medicine that he took on the ferry, as it might be dangerous.Ha-ri also reveals that she was the one who carried Ji-ui to safety after he collapsed on the ferry. After returning to the clinic, Ji-ui meets another doctor, Hyeon Chiyeon. Doctor on the Edge Episode 1 continues with Ji-ui getting dragged by the clinic staff to a restaurant.Hyeon Chiyeon also accompanied them. Ji-ui is quite surprised at the straightforwardness of Hyeon Chiyeon when he shares his opinions regarding plastic surgeons, which is Ji-ui’s specialty. Disappointments keep on arriving when Ji-ui sees the food that is being served in the restaurant. To avoid eating the food, Ji-ui returns to the clinic when they get a call regarding a patient.Ji-ui finds that Mr. Park is waiting outside the clinic and asks for medicine. However, after the checkup, Ji-ui realizes that Mr. Park’s condition is serious, as he is having a myocardial infarction. He promptly gives Mr. Park a medicine that helps him quickly, but understands that unless Mr. Park gets admitted to a proper hospital, things could take a negative turn. Instead of following Ji-ui’s pleas to wait in the clinic, Mr. Park leaves while Ji-ui calls for help.All the staff of the hospital begin to search for the patient before the chopper arrives to transport him to the hospital. Doctor on the Edge Episode 1 continues with Mr. Park’s condition worsening. Ji-ui tries to revive him using CPR. Right at that moment, the chopper arrives, and they transport Mr. Park to the hospital. Ji-ui also accompanies him. The next day, Ji-ui gets a call from the health center staff, who are extremely angry that Ji-ui has yet to return to the clinic. At the end of Doctor on the Edge Episode 1, Ji-ui rushes back to the dock but becomes reluctant.Snippets of his past are shown, depicting that there might be a darker reason that makes Ji-ui uncomfortable about islands.
