Jacob and Barbara are shocked because they have never changed a student's grade just to pass them. They have always prioritized a student learning lessons at their own pace over giving them a passing grade so that they can move along to the next grade.Barbara and Jacob are initially confident that other Abbott teachers do not modify grades like that either. However, when they find out that multiple teachers at Abbott have been doing the same as the other teachers, they decide to fight back against the district.Barbara and Jacob meet at Barbara's house for a brainstorming session. They come up with the plan to pitch to the district administration. Their plan is to suggest that a fair grading system be implemented at Abbott Elementary first, and if it proves to be a success, it can be implemented across all schools of the district. After feeling satisfied with the plan, Jacob leaves, and Barbara's husband, Gerald, approaches her. He asks:"I thought we talked about winding down towards retirement this year."Barbara admits that they did talk about that topic, and Gerald adds:"This doesn't look like winding down to me. Plus, the music club and night classes."Barbara admits that she understands where he's coming from. Gerald doesn't push the topic of retirement too hard but asks Barbara to think about it. However, Barbara's demeanor makes it evident that while she did consider starting the process of retiring at one point, she might not be ready for it after all.
