Here's what happened in the premiere episode of Elsbeth Season 4.

Elsbeth Season 4 Episode 1 recap: Serena Collyer kills Casey

The episode rolls out with couples therapist Serena Collyer speaking in a seminar. According to Collider, Serena tells the audience that she can improve their marriage. She shows a picture of her husband, Graham, whom she has been married to for 11 years.

Serena says that it is trust that helps her and Graham stay together. The camera then pans to a different scene where we see Serena arguing with a man called Casey. Casey is a struggling musician. He notices a ring on her hand that he got for her from Costa Rica around 20 years ago. Serena asks Casey if he is going back to California, to which he replies that he is not. Serena, however, isn't elated with his decision and asks him to go home. Casey calls Serena's bluff.

Later, Serena visits Casey's apartment and takes a gun from the drawer. She opens Casey's phone and texts Luke from his contact:

"I'm hooking up with your wife."

When Luke receives the message, he thinks it's Casey who is having an affair with his wife, Lauren. It turns out Serena's marriage success story is named the Jack and Jill case in Serena's book. Luke gets angry when he receives the provocative texts, and he beats Casey. Casey has absolutely no clue about who Lauren is. Luke leaves Casey on the floor, and Serena watches them from a distance. She comes near Casey and shoots him.

Elsbeth Season 4 Episode 1 recap: Elsbeth investigates Casey's death

Elsbeth, Detective Smullen, and Officer Hackett reach Casey's apartment and find his lifeless body on the floor. It appears Casey has killed himself with his gun, as there were no signs of foul play at present. Elsbeth notices an expensive bottle of wine. It initially seems like an open-and-shut case, but Elsbeth has doubts.

Luke's fingerprints were found on the doorknob, but they weren't present on the gun. Elsbeth also finds the texts Serena sent from Casey's phone to Luke. They track down Luke and Lauren. It turns out Lauren is cheating with Steve and not Luke. Luke admits to hitting Casey. Elsbeth then asks him about the Jack and Jill case from Serena's book that suggests he is a hothead. However, Luke tells her that he has gotten better.

When they approach Serena, she throws Luke under the bus and calls him out for his short-tempered behavior. Elsbeth then asks Lauren why she admitted to having an affair with Steve and not with Casey.

Serena says that Lauren is lying out of shame since she can't be seen with a struggling musician and says her type is financially stable men. Hackett finds out that there's no connection between Casey and Lauren. However, he does find out Serena's contact number from Casey's phone. He saved her contact information as 'Coreena'.

Elsbeth Season 4 premiere: Elsbeth exposes Serena Collyer's secret

According to Collider, Smullen and Elsbeth confront Serena at a couples workshop. Serena tells them that she dated Casey in high school. She said that she was surprised that her number was still on his phone. She said she was on a serenity walk on the night of Casey's murder. Hackett then brings the drummer from Casey's band for interrogation. He admitted that Serena and Casey were in a toxic relationship. The drummer said that Serena would go crazy if she couldn't contact Casey on the phone.

Elsbeth found a similar story in Serena's book. The story was called Sam and Diane. In the story, Sam and Diane were in a dysfunctional relationship. Diane would put on a ring that Sam bought from Costa Rica years ago.

However, Elsbeth found concrete evidence when she found surveillance footage of Serena purchasing a wine bottle similar to the one found in Casey's apartment. Elsbeth confronts Serena and shows her the video of her purchasing the wine. The video might not prove a lot, but the ring Casey gave to Serena has all the proof, including gunpowder residue and Casey's blood.

At the precinct, Smullen admits that his wife has left him. Elsewhere, Teddy and Roy finally fix a wedding date. Teddy also says that Elsbeth's mother has been constantly trying to contact her and that she should call her. However, it seems like Elsbeth isn't willing to do so.
