Emily Cooper has always sold you a fantasy first and a city guide second, and that is exactly why Emily in Paris keeps winning the trend of cinematic destinations. The show has created what's now being called the "Emily effect" as trendsetters and fans of the show are crowding in places that the show has been shot in or referenced.
France’s national cinema body has pointed out just how often screen stories spark the urge to visit Paris, with a huge share of foreign tourists claiming the show is what made them visit the city. French president Emmanuel Macron even awarded the show's creator the Legion of Honor for popularising France so much, and this new season, the show is returning with a new city to obsess over.
Season 5 leans all the way into that cinematic-destination magic, widening Emily’s playground beyond Paris and into Rome, with the teaser also nodding to Venice.
How Rome and Venice are joining the Emily in Paris trend
Talking about how the fifth season of Emily In Paris will now include new cities for Emily to explore, creator Darren Star told Tudum,
“This season is a tale of two cities: Rome and Paris. Straddling both, Emily takes love and life to the next level. From Parisian rooftops to Roman ruins, we can’t wait to share where Emily’s next chapter takes us."
The show has always treated cities like characters. Paris has always been more than a backdrop and the titular deuteragonist on the show. It has inspired, influenced and occasionally rolled its eyes at Emily Cooper’s American optimism. With Season 5, the Netflix hit expands that philosophy southward, letting Rome and Venice step into the spotlight and officially join the show’s growing legacy of turning real-world locations into cinematic obsessions.
The city of Rome has been a backdrop in quite a few iconic Hollywood films. So is Venice. Both the Italian cities have served dreamy locations in a number of films, think The Before trilogy, and All Roads Lead to Rome. Rome taps into a global craving for slower living without abandoning ambition. Venice feeds the desire for beauty that feels timeless and fragile. Together, they expand the show’s idea of what a dream destination can be. It is no longer just about chic apartments and fashionable cafés. It is about emotional atmosphere and how a city makes you feel when you wake up there and how it reshapes your priorities without you noticing.
By bringing Rome and Venice into the fold, Emily In Paris proves that its travel appeal is maturing and is only getting better. Season 5 is less about what city she wants to live in and more about what kind of life she wants to build, and whether a city can help you become a softer, braver version of yourself. If Paris was the fantasy that started it all, Rome and Venice are the chapters that will deepen it.
Emily In Paris is available to stream on Netflix. The fifth season will premiere on December 18.
