Invincible has never been a soft show. But Season 4, Episode 5 (Give Us a Moment) crossed into territory even for TV's most uncompromising super-series. In an interview with Polygon, Rob Kirkman, franchise creator, and Simon Racioppa, co-showrunner, admitted that the final fight between Mark Grayson and a Viltrumite named Conquest took the show much further than they had ever gone. Every season has to go further than the one before; that's part of the rule.

So how far is too far? The showrunners say that it's about the second that Conquest stabs straight through Mark and pulls his guts out of his stomach, without Mark ever letting go. That was the story that has been described by Kirkman and Racioppa as the most disturbing and savage thing the show has ever made. And they took that as a compliment.

Speaking with Polygon, Kirkman said:

“Everything has to be an escalation.”

He added:

“We saw Mark and Conquest fight in season 3. So if we're going to see Mark and Conquest fight again so soon in season 4, there had to be an escalation. I feel like we achieved a natural escalation.”

Invincible had a certain style from the opening moments of the pilot episode. The show started with its Superman stand-in tearing apart a team of heroes, and doing so violently with his naked hands. It announced from the outset that this was not going to be a standard-issue, mainstream superhero affair. And every new season has managed to top what came before.

Intention is key here. Kirkman has even described that he has a goal not to let the audience get numb. You want to make them feel something different. Something unexpected. If in a season the violence begins to seem familiar, then there is failure.

Invincible Season 4 was not to be an exception to this trend, though. As the Viltrumite War finally made it into the spotlight as the central conflict, the showrunners were given the story and the green light to push the boundaries even further.

Invincible Season 4 - The fight that made its own creators squirm

The rematch between Mark and Conquest had been brewing for a long time. Season 3 had left Mark nearly dead from the first fight. Fans had been waiting for the second round, but they had no idea how brutal the fight was going to be.

Polygon spoke with Racioppa, who said that the violence level in the fight is a sincere effort to depict what a serious fight between two nearly indestructible characters would consist of. Both Mark and Conquest are much too durable to be easily hurt. Hurting each other required enormous commitment and work. That honesty was the goal of the writers.

Kirkman contended that the horror of this scene isn't just about the gore. It's about what the gore symbolizes. Conquest isn't just trying to kill Mark; he is enjoying it. He is a sadist. He is reveling in the destruction. That emotional component is why the violence is so effective, as it transcends disgust.

The producers gave the voice artists and animators an early heads-up before working on that sequence, but despite dozens of viewings of the scene through numerous stages of animation, the showrunners claimed it remained disturbing. Kirkman noted that when a scene still gets under your skin after fifty viewings, that is a sign it is working.

Invincible Season 4 - What the scene actually shows

In Invincible Season 4 Episode 5, Conquest attacks Mark and his team on a Viltrumite cruiser. The battle quickly moves onto a neighboring planet. Mark finally manages to get hold of Conquest's throat, but refuses to let go. Conquest then strikes Mark's stomach, stabbing his hand through his abdomen and starting to pull out his organs. Mark continues to choke the life out of him.

Mark survives. Conquest does not.

When Nolan and Oliver locate Mark later, he is nearly dead, lying flattened against the corpse, his injury front and center. This is definitely one of the most excruciating graphic situations in Invincible Season 4.

Though this is undoubtedly one of the extreme episodes the show has ever done, Kirkman has hinted that it may not actually be the brutal episode of the season. In an interview with TV Insider, Kirkman alluded to two more sequences, one that tops this one in visual gore and one that is far grander in scope.

For a show already functioning at a breaking point, it's quite a promise. Fans who had survived the gut-wrenching ending of Invincible Season 4 Episode 5 now have to survive two more hurdles.
