The Sandra Cantu case recounts the heartbreaking story of a second grader from California who went out to play after school, and unlike most days, she didn't return home on March 27, 2009. This was the day when this little girl vanished, and the surveillance camera near her family’s home was the only thing that could help determine what happened.

When Sandra was reported missing, the surveillance footage was used as it became a key part of the investigation. It captured Sandra walking down the street shortly before she vanished, giving investigators a precise look at her final known movements.

The police, volunteers, dogs, divers, helicopters, and other teams were assigned to find Sandra. Investigators also received tips in the hope of finding out what had happened to the young girl.

After almost ten days, the search for Sandra Cantu took a devastating turn. Her dead body was found inside a black rolling suitcase in an irrigation pond, and just like the footage, the suitcase also emerged as an important part of the investigation.

The Sandra Cantu case: A look at how Sandra's final movements were captured on camera

The Sandra Cantu case is also featured in one of the episodes of FBI: Criminal Pursuit, which tells how the young girl returned from school on March 27, 2009, and went outside to play. When her mother couldn't find her, she started calling the neighbors and friends.

However, no one knew where Sandra was, and the episode reveals that around 2:45 p.m., the little girl went near Melissa Huckaby’s home but was turned away before later going to another friend’s house. The camera outside their house recorded her happily skipping in the streets, and it was the only evidence that showed her alive for the last known time.

According to the footage, Sandra briefly looked toward Huckaby’s residence before walking out of view. This gave investigators a starting point to figure out what could have happened.

About eight minutes later, the same camera caught Huckaby driving her SUV away from the mobile home park. She was heading toward Clover Road Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school.

Around this time, Huckaby claimed that someone stole her black Eddie Bauer suitcase. The episode of FBI: Criminal Pursuit also explains that she later traveled between the church and an irrigation pond, where a retired Marine and his wife saw her with the SUV.

When the woman was questioned, she said she stopped there only to urinate. Investigators then revealed that Sandra had already been killed by roughly 6 p.m. or earlier, and her mother called the Tracy Police Department after 7:00 pm. This way, the footage in which the little girl was seen alive for the last time became a key part of solving the Sandra Cantu case.

The search for Sandra continued in Tracy, with police, volunteers and specialist teams looking for any sign of her. Dogs, divers, helicopters, horses and ATVs were used, while the FBI later joined the effort. A reward also brought in hundreds of tips.

While the search continued, Huckaby stayed close to Sandra’s family. She texted Sandra’s mother and even invited Sandra’s sister over, behavior that later became part of the investigation.

A major clue appeared when a note with wrong spellings was found in the mobile home park. The note read:

"Cantu locked in stolin suitcase thrown in water onn Bacchetti Rd. and Whitehall Rd witness."

It pointed toward Sandra being inside a suitcase in water near Bacchetti Road and Whitehall Road. Handwriting analysis later connected the note to Huckaby. Around the same time, Huckaby was hospitalized after a reported suicide attempt.

Then, on April 6, a worker draining an irrigation pond found a large black suitcase in the mud. Sandra’s body was inside, and the suitcase matched the one Huckaby had reported stolen.

The Sandra Cantu case then took a darker turn as the autopsy found homicidal asphyxiation and alprazolam in Sandra’s system. Not only that, but the episode also reveals that Sandra was s*xually assaulted before she was sedated and smothered.

After the assault, the killer redressed her, and it was explained that the reason behind it could be that the killer knew her. The killer might have wished Sandra to look "presentable" even after the tragedy. After forensic reports were confirmed, the Sandra Cantu case was officially declared a murder investigation.

The evidence in the Sandra Cantu case closed in on Melissa Huckaby

Investigators searched Clover Road Baptist Church and found a rolling pin with a bent handle and a blood mark containing Sandra’s DNA. They also found window-blind cords linked to the suitcase and prescription bottles connected to the drug found in Sandra’s body.

Huckaby was on television because of the investigation, and people who saw her near the pond on the day of the murder recognized her. Her SUV’s movements also matched the timeline investigators had been building around Sandra’s disappearance.

The suitcase, Huckaby’s connection to Sandra, the note, the pond sighting, and the evidence from the church all pointed in the same direction. On April 10, 2009, Melissa Huckaby was arrested and charged with kidnapping, r*pe, and the murder of an 8-year-old girl.

The arrest of the killer in the Sandra Cantu case shocked everyone because she wasn't an outsider. She was someone everyone in the neighborhood knew, and Huckaby even taught Sunday school and knew Sandra's family. So, it was really hard to digest the fact that she murdered the innocent girl.

On May 10, 2010, Huckaby pleaded guilty to first-degree murder with a kidnapping special circumstance. Under the agreement, prosecutors dropped the death penalty and certain other charges. On June 14, she received life without parole.

Huckaby admitted to her crimes, but she also claimed that she did not s*xually assault the little girl. She said:

"I owe you an explanation. But I still cannot understand why I did what I did."
