FBI Season 9 Episode 5, titled Atonement, aired on CBS on November 2. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the official synopsis for the episode reads as follows:

“When a prison transport van is attacked and eight female convicts escape, the team is sent on a hunt for the missing prisoners. When all but one is located, they look to find the motive behind the escape. Meanwhile, Scola grapples with a big life change.”

According to TV Insider, the latest episode of FBI Season 9 featured the team's hunt for eight escaped female inmates. The Federal Bureau of Prisons was attacked during a prisoner transfer, resulting in the escape of eight high-profile female criminals. The team tracked down six inmates. But they feared that the escape was orchestrated by Genesis, who was wanted for attempted murder of a federal agent.

Here's how the team tracked down the inmates.

Nina has an impressive job offer in FBI Season 9 Episode 5

FBI Season 9 Episode 5 began with Maggie and OA asking Scola about Nina's promotion. Maggie revealed rumours were going around about Nina getting her own task force, with her own hires and a budget. While Jubal remarked that it was a huge step-up for the family, Scola was concerned. It was only later, when Eva confronted Scola about Nina's job promotion, that he revealed that the job was in San Diego, meaning Nina would have to move to California.

Scola feared that with Dougie growing older and their current jobs, a new location would uproot their lives. While Scola agreed that the job promotion would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Nina, he admitted to Eva that he asked her not to take it:

“I don’t know. She’s worked so hard for this. … Her whole career. But we have a life here. We’d have to uproot everything. Just the sacrifice that’s needed if Nina takes this gig; I just don’t know if our family would survive that. I told her not to take it, Eva. I said she shouldn’t accept the promotion.”

It turns out the team was wrong in FBI Season 9 Episode 5. Genesis and her husband were arrested. The escape was planned by the second inmate, Laila Sarbani. Laila was serving a sentence for a white-collar crime. The team discovered that Laila was an Afghan-American who worked as an analyst for the American military. However, she switched sides after stealing money from a company and distributing it among Afghan refugees.

Things took a turn when the team discovered that Laila was working for a cause in FBI Season 9 Episode 5. She felt that the American government used Afghans as interpreters and military personnel in the war, with the promise of a green card. But that promise fell through, and the people became refugees. While they could not return to their own country, they could not get citizenship in America, either.

In the final moments of FBI Season 9 Episode 5, Scola and the team discovered that Laila and her crew were planning to rob a bank and distribute money to the Afghan crowd. After the crew took hostages, Scola suggested allowing Laila to escape to rescue the hostages. But things took a turn as Laila's crew pretended to be hostages and escaped with four million dollars on Scola's watch. While one of the members was caught, the team failed to track down the money, which could mean trouble for Scola in upcoming episodes.

As the episode concluded, Eva advised Scola not to stand in the way of Nina's dreams. It looks like Scola was affected by the turn of the case, and he changed his mind and left a voicemail for Nina:

“Hey, it’s me. I’ve been thinking more about San Diego. I think you should take the job. It’s worth it. We’ll figure it out, OK? I love you."
