Here's everything we know about the upcoming Firefly animated project

Nostalgia is returning, but in an animated format, as a new project for Firefly is underway. As per the report, the main stars of the 2002 series are anticipated to return in this animated series. The stars who are expected to lend their voices for their respective characters include Gina Torres, Alan Tudyk, Sean Maher, Morena Baccarin, Summer Glau, Jewel Staite, and Adam Baldwin.

The sci-fi series of the early 2000s explores the plot of how a crew of space ruffians copes with life as they take dangerous, high-stakes work in order to sustain themselves. The show stands with a strong rating of 8.9/10 on IMDb.

The upcoming animated project is supported by 20th Television Animation, in collaboration with the production house of Nathan Fillion- Collision33. So, apart from voice-acting, the actor is also set to serve as a producer on the project. However, the showrunner of the original Firefly series, Joss Whedon, is not affiliated with this project.

Tara Butters and Marc Guggenheim have been brought on board to serve as the showrunners of the show. Butters is well known for her work in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Reaper, Emergence, and Gen V, whereas Guggenheim's previous iconic work includes Green Lantern, Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, Wizards: Tales of Arcadia, etc. The screenplay of the animated series is also ready.

In fact, an early concept artwork has been set up in association with ShadowMachine. It is an animation studio that gave us Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, Robot Chicken, and BoJack Horseman. The project materials for the animated project will be submitted to prospective clients in the near future, in order to gain a platform for the show.

Nathan Fillion talked candidly about the upcoming project in a conversation with the outlet. He addressed the pop culture significance of the show and the importance of its revival, as he stated:

“The dedication of Firefly fans has kept this 25-year-old show relevant. Clearly, the return of Firefly is something the fans want. More importantly, it’s something they deserve."

Reportedly, the storyline of the animated series sits right in between the events of the original series and Serenity. Directed and penned by Whedon, this 2005 film continues the saga of the series.
