For All Mankind Season 5 Episode 3 recap: Ed's in a hospital after falling unconscious, while the conflict on Mars deepens
Ed wakes up, but he’s already made his choice about his fate
Ed Baldwin surviving his unconsciousness in Episode 3 of For All Mankind Season 5 isn’t actually the real twist here. He does wake up, but what matters more is what he chooses to do after waking up.

The doctors confirm what everyone has feared right from Episode 1, and i.e.,: Stage 3 cancer, and it’s serious enough that even flying was already a huge risk. He knew that, and he still went ahead and did it.
In For All Mankind Season 5, Ed doesn’t even want to fight for more time. He rejects chemotherapy because living seems quite pointless to him now. For him, it is not worth dragging things out by doing chemo just to suffer even more. He says that he would rather remain himself till the end instead of turning the last few days of life into a medical battle he doesn’t believe in at all.
While he’s in the hospital, his mind keeps going back to the time that he served during the Korean War and these memories explain why Ed has always carried guilt inside of him.
A friend died trying to help Ed and the guilt of this death never left him. This is why Ed has always wanted to be loyal to his loved ones even if it costs him his own life.
Kelly tries her to change his mind whith some experimental treatment hoping that there’s still some hope left, but Ed tells her to stop focusing on saving him and instead focus on the Titan mission.
At the end of the day, Ed has come to terms with his death, and he does not wish to get any medical help to stop his death from happening.
Aleida is forced to choose Mars over her own life
While Ed decides to let himself die in Episode 3 of For All Mankind Season 5, Aleida’s arc also seems to be going in the opposite direction. The race to Titan is suddenly very urgent because Kuragin is now preparing to launch in six weeks.

Helios now believes that there could be life on Titan, and if Kuragin gets there first, they lose more than just credit, they would lose the moment.
Aleida is stuck with a problem that does not even have an easy fix. The current ship isn’t built for what they need, and building a new one is nearly next to impossible within the time they have. That’s when Margo brings up something unexpected. Sojourner 1.
Now, Sojourner 1. is not just any ship. It’s something Aleida had designed years ago. But the ship has not been used in decades, which is a very long time, and bringing it back isn’t just technical work. It is also connected to who she used to be and everything she’s built since then.
At first, she refuses because this feels very risky and it also feels too uncertain. But Margo pushes her to see it differently, because right now, there is no better option than this fix.
Aleida doesn’t even want to go. Her family is on Earth, and leaving them for nearly a year feels impossible. She tries to manage everything the best she can, thinking she can still make it work from a distance, but this is only an illusion that breaks pretty fast. The condition of Sojourner 1 can’t be fully understood through screens because she needs to be there.
Her family ends up being the ones who push her in Episode 3 of For All Mankind Season 5 to take this step and they are the ones who tell her to go even when she’s the one who is hesitating.
Now, since they're the ones asking her to go, she has to trust them and not think about abandoning them.
Even her bond with Margo like their daily routine, their relationship, it’s something Aleida does not want to lose. But Margo makes it clear that she won’t hold her back.
By the end of this arc in Episode 3 of For All Mankind Season 5, Aleida makes the call. She’s going to Mars, and not because it’s an easy thing to do, but because it’s the only way out of this situation.
Mars politics explode as Lee finds protection
In Episode 3 of For All Mankind Season 5, the situation on Mars is far from being stable. After everything that happened with Lee, things have split into clear sides.

Lee manages to reach the ISN compound, and the power dynamics seem to have been changed now. The Independent Spacefaring Nations are introduced properly here, and they’re not aligned with the M-6. There’s tension already because of resource control, especially iridium.
When Lee enters the ISN territory, they refuse to hand him over. From their point of view, sending him back would be the same as handing him to his death, and so, they decide to protect him.
This decision doesn’t only just keep Lee safe, but it also creates a much more bigger divide between factions on Mars.
Back in the M-6 system, the focus is mostly on being able to control the situation now. After Ed’s decision, the leadership wants to shut down anything that might look like resistance. The Sons and Daughters of Mars are being hunted, and the idea of reopening Yoon’s case is basically dismissed at present.
There’s a clear shift here and now it’s about keeping order, even if that means to stick with the wrong conclusion.
That’s why Lee being alive and protected in Episode 3 of For All Mankind Season 5 is of so much importance, as in a way, it keeps the conflict alive and it also exposes just how fragile the system actually is.
Celia pushes too far and gets shut down hard
Celia Boyd is one of the few people still trying to question what really happened to Yoon. She doesn’t buy the story, and she is very much so convinced that Kuragin is involved in whatever has happened.

During her investigation in Episode 3 of For All Mankind Season 5, she tracks down Mahmoud Hesar (who saw Lee and Yoon before Yoon could be killed), and he gives her a few hints that could be of help.
One detail that is revealed is that Mahmoud works with Kuragin. When Celia starts asking about the suspicious cargo, his behavior seems to change as he gets nervous, especially when he notices someone watching them.
Celia follows that lead, and that’s where things go bad because she’s attacked and wakes up in a hospital.
Instead of support, she gets sidelined. Sheriff Palmer puts her on six weeks of medical leave which might look like concern but it’s a way to keep her out of the investigation.
Even her colleague Fred doesn’t fully get why she wants to involve herself so much. But for Celia, this isn’t something she can drop as she already has a history of taking risks, and being warned hasn’t changed that.
The system doesn’t want Celia to look and dig deeper and there is enough of pressure to close the case, keep Lee as the main suspect, and move on.
In Episode 3 of For All Mankind Season 5, Celia realizes that she can’t trust the people around her. Not Palmer, even. If she wants the truth, she’ll have to find another way, possibly outside the official chain.
