Friends co-creator's first sitcom in 11 years officially lands at Amazon

It's been more than a decade since Friends' co-creator Marta Kauffman introduced viewers to her last sitcom. And now she's finally stepping back into the comedy world with a new title as Amazon MGM Studios has officially given a series order to DINKS (Dual Income No Kids).

It will be her first comedy show after Grace and Frankie premiered on Netflix in 2015. Kauffman has remained active in the television world, but her upcming show will bring back the original style she is known for.

However, the Friends' co-creator is taking a different approach instead of the traditional multi-camera sitcom format. Kauffman will incorporate improvisation into the series so that fans get to experience and even more engagingly incorporate screens.

The comedy will focus on a couple navigating life liantogether as they take on the challenge of renovating a house. At first, it looks easy, but the two soon realize that this is far more complicated than expected.

DINKS marks Friends' co-creator Marta Kauffman's sitcom comeback

Martha Kauffman's return to the world of sitcom has become even more special because it's happening after 11 years. She first became a household name after co-creating Friends with David Crane, which ran for ten successful seasons and remains a fan-favorite.

Following its conclusion, Kauffman continued working in television through projects such as Jesse and Related. She also worked on Netflix's Grace and Frankie, which premiered in 2015 and had seven seasons.

Now, with DINKS, Martha Kauffman is introducing her first new sitcom since then. She has developed the series alongside Hannah K.S. Canter, but the Friends' co-creator has made it clear that she wasn't interested in returning simply to repeat a familiar formula. She said:

"I've always said I wouldn't do another multi-cam unless someone was able to reinvent it. Okay Goodnight and I got tired of waiting, and decided we should do it ourselves."

The Friends co-creator continued:

"It's what I hoped it would be: unique, hilarious and warm. Shooting this show is like being on a roller coaster in the dark. You have no idea where it's going to go, but you know it's going to be fun."

The decision to add improvisation and a more creative approach for DINKS has added new energy to this project. Overall, it's like a roller coaster where no one knows what comes next.

What Amazon's new comedy DINKS is about

The title DINKS stands for Dual Income No Kids, hinting at the main couple of the story. It follows Josh and Charlie, who choose to build a life together without getting married or having children.

However, their plan does not go as they plan when they start renovating their dream home as they discover that the property creates far more problems than they anticipated. What's even more interesting is that the lead roles are played by real-life married couple Paul Scheer and June Diane Raphael.

The two also serve as executive producers on the series, while Jon Gabrus joins the cast as a series regular. Unlike a traditional multi-camera sitcom that relies entirely on scripted dialogue, DINKS allows improvisation.

It's produced by Okay Goodnight, Lionsgate Television, and Amazon MGM Studios. Additionally, the upcoming sitcom is also backed by a collaboration with Publicis Media Content Innovation. Currently, there's no update on the release date or production timeline.
