Stranger Things Season 5 is about to drop its Volume 2 on Christmas but fans are still not over Will Byers' jaw-dropping transformation in the final moments of Volume 1. When all hope was lost and Vecna's minions aka the Demogorgons, were attacking Mike, Lucas and Robin from all sides, an unlikely superhero rose, who was none other than Will the Sorcerer.

While Will's shining moment in Stranger Things Season 5 Part 1 was shocking, it was not sudden. The Duffer Brothers cheekily opened the first episode of the final season with a flashback to a young Will, when he was taken into the Upside Down by Vecna for the first time, ten years ago. While fans were unaware at the time, the moment was a quiet foreshadowing and a full-circle moment for Will, Vecna's first victim, who formed a deadly connection with his hive mind back in Season 1.

As established in the freshman season, Will Byers is probably the most underrated character from his friend group of Mike, Dustin and Lucas, who eventually become the Hawkins gang.

Will Byers' transformation is the most emotional and defining moment in Stranger Things Season 5, here's why.

Exploring Will Byers' coming-of-age arc in Stranger Things Season 5

For years, Will Byers existed on the emotional margins of Stranger Things. He was the boy who disappeared, the child the Upside Down marked first and the character whose trauma often unfolded quietly while others took center stage. While Eleven became the show's supernatural weapon, Nancy, Jonathan & Steve got deeply entangled in a love triangle and Dustin, Mike & Lucas drove much of the action, Will Byers became the silent undercurrent.

As Joyce expressed to Hopper in the Stranger Things Pilot, Will was always a different kid, much more sensitive and observant than kids his age. After his brush with the mind-flayer and the Upside Down, Will was deeply connected to a sinister force, powerful but not understood by anyone. This alienation and silent suffering over the years finally pay off in Stranger Things Season 5, when Will discovers that his connection to the hive mind gives him psychic powers to control the demogorgons.

Stranger Things Season 5 transforms Will's weakness into his strength

It was quite befitting how Stranger Things Season 5 transformed Will's weakness (and his ability to feel human emotions) into his biggest strength. After years of being a victim, silently suffering between visions and neck tingles, Will finally channels his inner strength and accepts himself completely, thanks to Robin's pep talk. Volume 1 featured an added layer of Joyce's motherly concern, which stopped Will from reaching his true potential.

However, it was only after Robin shared her own experience of coming out and accepting herself for who she is that Will unlocked his true self. After a flash of his happy memories with Mike, his childhood best friend and safe place, he unlocks his psychic powers and saves Mike, Lucas and Robin from the Demogorgons.

Stranger Things Season 5 reframes Will’s emotional depth as a strength rather than a liability. His empathy, long dismissed as fragility, becomes the key to resisting Vecna’s influence. Instead of being protected, Will becomes the sorcerer, a guiding force for the Hawkins gang in the upcoming episodes.

Will's evolution also brings narrative justice. His isolation and sense of being “different” are no longer subtextual burdens but integral to his role. His outsider perspective is precisely what allows him to stand apart from Vecna’s hive-like control. In choosing Will as the character most capable of challenging the Mind Flayer’s legacy, Stranger Things makes a powerful statement and establishes him as the most important character in the sci-fi saga.

Vecna chose Will Byers because he seemed weak, vulnerable and easy to break but that choice backfired. Will’s empathy and ability to adapt to the Upside Down turned suffering into strength, subverting Vecna’s control and transforming the supposed weakest link into his greatest threat for Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2.
