Game of Thrones fans, there's yet another rendition of the show coming your way. But no, this time, it's not a series or a movie spin-off of the original HBO show. This time, instead, the show will come to fans on a theatre stage, right at the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Game of Thrones is based on George R.R. Martin's book series, A Song of Ice and Fire, and ran successfully for eight seasons before the final season concluded back in 2019. The series spans about 73 episodes and has kept fans hooked till the very end.

After that, the show saw several spin-offs, including the spin-off that is currently airing, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

However, now fans have a new format to look forward to, with Game of Thrones: The Mad King.

As with every adaptation of his popular novel series, George R.R. Martin is actively involved in the entire creative process and is working hand in hand with director Dominic Cooke and playwright Duncan Macmillan to bring the play to life.

The Game of Thrones theatre adaptation, Game of Thrones: The Mad King is based ten years before the events of the show

In conversation with Deadline, Dominic Cooke spoke at length about the process of bringing Game of Thrones: The Mad King to life. Speaking about the plot, the director says that the events of the play are set ten years before the events of the original storyline take place, meaning that many of the key characters that fans recognise from the show will be present in the play, but much younger.

According to Cooke, the story will primarily focus on Ned Stark, his sister Lynna, and Jamie Lannister. However, other characters like Varys and Rhaegar Targaryen will also appear in the play in pivotal roles.

While obviously some knowledge about the main storyline is required, Cooke assured that they had tried toinclude elements in the play that made it interesting for people with lesser Game of Thrones knowledge as well.

"One of our ambitions is to make a show that really works for people who don’t know the material as people who do and every sort of shade in between … because obviously there will be people who come who don’t know it, and we want to give them a satisfying evening as well. So we’ve sort of tried to make a contained thing as well as something that gives the fans all the extra bits of story that they don’t know."

He also speaks at length about the importance of Lynna Stark in the play, saying that she was one of the lesser explored characters in the show, but was extremely pivotal to the storyline.

"She’s a really good swords person, so she doesn’t really fit the mold of how the women at that time were supposed to behave. But she’s also very intuitive and very smart, and she’s a live wire."

He continues,

"She’s got a rebellious streak to her and also, like everyone in that world, if you’re in these high families, you have to conform. And this is where it’s rather like in Shakespeare."

So far, the details that have been divulged about the play have gotten fans really excited to watch a version of their favourite series in a different format.

Tickets for Game of Thrones: The Mad King will be available for sale starting April.
