Therefore, he meant to say that at that time he would have needed nine hours to drive to Midland. The actor addressed the rumor sarcastically by explaining to the audience how two people living far from each other could become half-brothers.

Austin American-Statesman mentioned that the Interstellar star Matthew McConaughey recently spoke about the rumor during his visit to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. On the show, he joked that the story about Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson being half-brothers has spread so widely that he might think about taking a DNA test to end the discussion.

McConaughey also clarified the matter by presenting his reasoning. He started explaining with his statement:

"For instance, Woody and I grew up in Texas."

He further mentioned that Woody grew up in Midland, but he grew up in Longview, a six-and-a-half-hour journey as of today, as told by Jimmy. McConaughey added more detail by pointing out that the freeway speed limits in Texas used to be lower than they are now.

McConaughey explained that in those days it would have taken him around nine hours to reach Midland from Longview. He used this explanation in a sarcastic way to show the audience that the rumor was not believable, asking how two people living so far apart could be considered half‑brothers.
