Grey's Anatomy's Meredith was never one for traditional wedding dresses and that's not changing soon, teases showrunner

Grey's Anatomy's Meredith Grey had a great romance with Derek Shepherd and did get married to him, but not in a traditional ceremony. She did not want to wear a traditional wedding dress and did not walk down the aisle. Thus, in Season 5's episode 24, Meredith and Derek took their vows in the presence of just each other.

Cut to Grey's Anatomy Season 23: Meredith is engaged to Dr. Nick Marsh. But we still won't get to see her in a traditional wedding dress, as teased by Grey's Anatomy's showrunner, Meg Marinis.

Meredith and Nick's wedding in Grey's Anatomy will not include a traditional wedding dress

Meredith (played by Ellen Pompeo) proposed to Nick (played by Scott Speedman) in Grey's Anatomy Season 22's final episode, Bridge Over Troubled Water. In the proposal, she said she did not want a traditional wedding or a white dress. However, since she didn't have any of that the first time around, fans wondered if the show would somehow still surprise the viewers with a traditional wedding, with some of the older cast members like Cristina, Izzie, and Alex returning to attend the ceremony.

This is because, while Meredith and Derek (played by Patrick Dempsey) had a great love story, they did not have a traditional wedding or wear a traditional wedding dress. Meredith and Derek had originally planned a small ceremony, but then they let Izzie plan a large wedding for herself and Alex instead, because she was battling cancer and her days were thought to be numbered.

Meredith had also tried on wedding dresses before the ceremony and realized she didn't want a traditional wedding and that a traditional wedding dress wasn't for her. After giving their wedding day to Izzie and Alex, Derek and Meredith made their own commitment official in a hospital locker room.

There, Derek asked for a piece of paper for a contract, and Meredith handed him a blue Post-it note. They wrote down and signed their vows to love each other, never run away, and take care of each other through everything, including old age and if either were to develop Alzheimer's.

They later had a formal city hall wedding to make things legally official and help facilitate the adoption of their daughter, Zola. In Season 11, Derek suffered a severe head trauma from an accident, which was mismanaged by a local hospital, resulting in him being brain dead. As his wife, Meredith had to make the decision to turn off his life support.

It has taken Meredith years to cope with the pain and loss, and she has finally found love again. Now that she's engaged to Nick, fans were hoping to see the couple get married in a proper traditional wedding. But it looks like that won't be happening.

Shondaland's Malcolm Venable spoke to Grey's Anatomy's showrunner, Meg Marinis, about Season 23 and asked her about Meredith and Nick's relationship going forward. Addressing the topic, Marinis said:

"Nick is definitely back this season alongside Meredith, and we pick that storyline right back up. As for whether there will be a wedding, who’s to say? But I can guarantee it won’t be one where she’s wearing a traditional white dress!"

Thus, we will most likely see Meredith and Nick get married in a private and simple ceremony where Meredith wears anything but a traditional wedding dress.
