There’s a big question hanging over the whole thing: if your ex-sister-in-law shows up needing help with a tricky case and her own life is kind of a mess, how do you even begin to say no? For Amelia, it’s definitely not simple. Addison’s patient suddenly needs emergency neurosurgery, and on top of that, Addison’s marriage is falling apart. It’s a lot, even for Amelia.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Episode 10: What does Addison’s case mean for Amelia’s future?

In Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Episode 10, Addison Montgomery did not go to Seattle to pay a friendly visit. She came with a pregnant patient named Emma, who was complaining of severe headaches and difficulty with her vision. Emma owned an animal sanctuary with her husband and had ceased birth control at his request, getting herself pregnant in the present case. What appeared to be the normal problems of pregnancy soon turned out to be much more worrisome, as Amelia’s tests showed something much deeper under the surface.

The brain scans revealed a tumor that was rapidly growing because of the pregnancy hormones in Emma. The situation became serious as Emma lost her eyesight, and her peripheral vision worsened to the point that she was unable to see at all. This was not an ordinary case, as it required emergency surgery performed by one of the best neurosurgeons. This is where Amelia faced complications in Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Episode 10 because she was technically on sabbatical and not an active surgeon at Grey Sloan Memorial.

At first, Amelia tried to refer the case to another surgeon. She was making cookies in her apartment in Seattle, having relocated from Boston, and was not prepared to start again in the OR. Her husband, Jake, whom she married at the Private Practice series finale back in 2013, was now worn down by her work with the PRT. The PRT is a mobile medical service that allows women to obtain healthcare amid rising limitations on abortion, birth control, and other vital procedures. He wanted her to return home and stop prioritizing her work.

In Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Episode 10, Addison explained that Jake was her biggest fan and used to send care packages and discuss difficult cases with her. But things had changed. Now all he did was complain. His ultimatum was obvious: either him or the work. The mother of one of Amelia’s patients, a young girl named Dylan, caused the explosion, which made Amelia feel directly responsible for Monica’s death. She had performed a life-threatening operation on Dylan, which only resulted in the child being trapped inside her own body and possibly spending the remainder of her life in a care home.

Addison’s case made Amelia confront whether she was still able to work under pressure, make life-or-death choices, and manage the emotional burden of neurosurgery that she had previously experienced. The fact that Addison prioritized her job over her marital life, and could endure the worst personal heartbreak to save a patient, appears to have reminded Amelia why she decided to become a surgeon in the first place.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Episode 10 raised several unanswered questions as well. Emma’s surgery was a success, but what about Addison’s marriage? Nevertheless, the word “divorce” was never mentioned in the episode, so one could hope that she and Jake might manage to reconcile.

There is also the question of whether Addison will return to Grey Sloan with her marriage in shambles. Kate Walsh is not yet confirmed to appear in any further episodes this season, but the open-ended nature of her storyline indicates that we may see more of Dr. Montgomery in the future.

In Amelia’s case, the future is not much clearer either. Yes, she is back at work, but is she truly healed from the trauma of the explosion and Monica’s death? The showrunner had already stated that Amelia would have to rethink a few things during her time away, and that her return would revolve around personal development and a renewed sense of purpose.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Episode 10 revealed that Amelia still possesses the talent and intuition to be a brilliant neurosurgeon. The only lingering question is whether she can handle the emotional weight attached to it, particularly given her history of taking on impossible cases that have sometimes ended in tragedy.
