"Had no expectation to be back": Lioness star opens up about Aaliyah's shocking return in Season 3 finale twist

Lioness Season 3 saved one of its biggest surprises for the finale, bringing Aaliyah back in a twist no one saw coming. The Season 3 finale, titled The Unravelling, reveals that Aaliyah, played by Stephanie Nur, was the one who had Joe taken.

She wanted to use Joe to bring Cruz and the rest of the team out, to make them pay for what happened to her father. This was a big turn of events for the fans who saw the actress last time in Season 1.

Speaking to Taste of Country, Nur opened up about her character, Aaliyah's return in the Lioness Season 3 finale, saying:

"After we wrapped the first season, I kept having dreams as Aaliyah. Of course, being quite attached to this character, I've always thought about what happens to her and had my own scenarios. But no, I had no expectation to be back."

Stephanie Nur reveals what it was like to return as Aaliyah in Lioness Season 3

The Lioness Season 3 finale finally answered one of the biggest questions: Who was behind Joe's kidnapping? And it turns out it was none other than Aaliyah. The reveal was done at the very end of the finale episode when Bahat enters a room where a woman is seen in the bathtub. He tells her they were close, but it didn't work out, and they missed her for the second time. He then asks what she wants to do. The woman tells him to try again, saying maybe the third time's "the charm."

Bahat says it would have been much easier if they had taken care of it there, adding:

"The difficulty isn't getting to her, it's getting her out"

The scene then reveals that the woman is Aaliyah, who is giving orders as she says they have to get her out because once they do, the others will come to save her. That way, they can get all of them.

This is where Aaliyah's revenge plan finally starts to make sense, as back in Season 1, Cruz killed Aaliyah's father after they grew close. From her recent return in Season 3, it is clear that she wants payback by kidnapping Joe, knowing that the QRF team will come to rescue her.

When asked by Taste of Country whether she knew about the plot, the actress said that she did not know she would return. She explained that she was attached to Aaliyah and often wondered what happened to her but never thought she would return to the role.

Aaliyah's surprise return in Lioness Season 3 has also sparked much speculation about what she could do next if the series returns for another season. Interestingly, just like the viewers, Nur does not know what happens next either.

In the interview, she explained that she is just like everyone else watching the show and waiting to see what happens if the series gets renewed. She added that Taylor Sheridan's writing can take the story in many different directions, adding:

"He plants these seeds that could go different possible ways. And then it's never what you expect, but it always makes sense."

As of now, Lioness Season 4 has not been officially renewed. Interested viewers can watch the first three seasons on Paramount+.
