The first Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone teaser trailer dropped online, and it focuses on Harry's life at Hogwarts. Unlike the footage released in March, this teaser was focused on Hogwarts and its students. We are given multiple perspectives about the anxieties first-year students feel as they take the first step in their wizarding career.
But the most surprising moment in this trailer is at the 1:52 mark in the video as we see a man and a woman lighting up a bridge. The two are probably a couple, and if rumors are to be believed, they are Harry's parents: James and Lily. If it is indeed the case, HBO's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone will give us a glimpse into the life of the Potter family as they are in hiding in Godric's Hollow with their newborn.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone teaser trailer fleshes out the Wizarding World
The teaser begins with the Hogwarts Express entering the Hogsmeade Station. Then the scene cuts to students in the Great Hall, as Minerva McGonagall leads them to the Sorting Ceremony. Then the familiar Sorting Ceremony happens, in which we see Harry getting sorted into Gryffindor House. Meanwhile, we see Hermione Granger trying to ask fellow students if they studied during the summer.
Then we hear McGonagall laying down her clear expectations to young Harry: She wants him to be regular in his studies. Apart from Harry, the HBO series also gives perspectives of others as we hear a first-year girl feeling anxious before the sorting ceremony. However, this trailer does retain the wonder and magic of the Wizarding World that we have come to expect from the franchise.
We catch glimpses of moments like Neville, Harry, Ron, and Hermione encountering Fluffy for the first time, Harry coming across the Mirror of Erised, the Boy Who Lived playing his first Quidditch match, and his taking Snape's frequent taunts. We even see a glimpse of a cloaked figure at one point in the trailer, clearly our first look at Voldemort in the series, but the character remains uncast.
However, the greatest hits of the first book are not the highlights of the Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone teaser trailer.
HBO is fleshing out the Potters' time in Godric's Hollow
We see scenes set in Godric's Hollow before the fateful night Voldemort attacked the Potters. We get a scene of a man and a woman lighting up a bridge in golden light. We are not given any proper context about this scene, but they are probably Lily and James Potter.
If that's indeed the case, we may see more of the Potters' time in hiding in the village, before Voldemort attacked their home. This scene might very well be from the first episode of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which may end on a tragic note, as Voldemort kills the couple, and tries to do the same to their son, Harry. But as we know it, the curse backfires, and we may even get a small hint of Voldemort's soul latching on to Harry, setting up Horcruxes.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is scheduled to release this December. Rewatch all eight movies on HBO Max before that.
