As HBO’s Harry Potter series is still filming, HBO has officially confirmed the release window for the fantasy series. An adaptation of the popular seven-part fantasy books that ended nineteen years ago, the upcoming HBO series is not the first time that these novels have been adapted. There was an eight-part film franchise that ended in 2011.

HBO ordered a small-screen adaptation of these books three years ago and began filming last year. It had long been expected that the series would debut in 2027. A Deadline report published on Friday confirms this.

Casey Bloys confirmed HBO's Harry Potter release window:

Casey Bloys is the Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content. He sat down for an interview with Deadline this Friday, in which he discussed several ongoing and future HBO projects like Industry, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Euphoria, and House of the Dragon. However, the conversation shifted to the Potter series, as the Deadline reporter asked Casey Bloys the following question:

"And last but not least, have you narrowed down the premiere window for the Harry Potter series?"

Bloys responded:

"Well, we’ve been saying 2027. I would say, to narrow it down to some extent, early 2027. And now you’re going to ask, does that mean January, February, March, April, that we’re not ready to say. I’ll say early 2027."

Bloys even hinted at an early 2027 release window in a September 2025 interview with Deadline. This would mean that the first season will finish filming sometime this year.

What do we know about the HBO fantasy series?

The first season adapts the first book in the franchise, Philosopher's Stone, and the plan for now seems to adapt one book per season. Dominic McLaughlin is playing the titular character, Arabella Stanton is playing Hermione, and Alastair Stout is Ron Weasley. Two weeks ago, Hans Zimmer was composing the musical score for the series, meaning the show may probably stop using the John Williams music. The public statement for this announcement read:

"The musical legacy of Harry Potter is a touch point for composers everywhere and we are humbled to join such a remarkable team on a project of this magnitude. The responsibility is something that myself, Kara Talve and Anže Rozman do not take lightly. Magic is all around us, often just beyond reach, but as in the world of Harry Potter, you simply must look for it. With this score we hope to bring audiences that little bit closer to it whilst honouring what has come before.”

We also know that if everything works out, the series will run for a decade, for seven seasons, as there are seven books. The first season will introduce us to this new wizarding world as Harry leaves his aunt and uncle's house to begin his magical journey and learn why he is considered the savior of this magical world.

"Harry Potter has never even heard of Hogwarts when the letters start dropping on the doormat at number four, Privet Drive. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry’s eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!"

Catch all eight movies of the franchise, which are streaming on HBO Max as we wait for the HBO series.
