The official teaser trailer for the upcoming HBO Harry Potter series has been released, and it takes adult fans of the franchise right back to their childhood. While fans had concerns about whether the series would do justice to the books, the trailer has given them hope that it will.
In the latest trailer, we see highlights from Philosopher's Stone, the first book in the series, which Season 1 adapts. While everything looks wonderful and nostalgic, there is one scene that is surprisingly book accurate. In the original Harry Potter films, Neville wasn't with the trio when they encountered Fluffy for the first time. But he will be with them in the series.
The Harry Potter series brings back Neville for a scene he was excluded from in the films
While the Harry Potter films are celebrated for how well-made they are, there have been times when they haven't been book accurate. Fans have overlooked some of those inaccuracies because they were minor. However, it looks like the series intends to be more book accurate.
In the trailer, we get a short look at Harry (played by Dominic McLaughlin), Ron (played by Alastair Stout), Hermione (played by Arabella Stanton), and Neville (played by Rory Wilmot), as they encounter Fluffy for the first time. In the Philosopher's Stone book, four of them accidentally ended up in the forbidden third-floor corridor when they were trying to escape Filch after a failed midnight duel with Draco Malfoy.
Hermione unlocked a locked door with Alohomora to hide inside the room, not knowing that Fluffy would be inside, guarding the trapdoor to the Philosopher's Stone. Fluffy was a giant, three-headed dog owned by Rubeus Hagrid, who bought him from a Greek man in a pub and had loaned him to Dumbledore during Harry's first year at Hogwarts.
Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville hadn't realized Fluffy was in the room until Neville pointed it out, and they hurriedly left the room and went back to the Gryffindor common room. Neville became deeply traumatized by the giant dog, and never dared to go back to the room again.
The Philosopher's Stone film portrayed this scene differently. In the film, the trio never encountered Neville on their way to the duel. Thus, he is completely absent from the scene where Harry, Ron, and Hermione accidentally stumble into Fluffy's room while hiding from Filch.
Thus, it looks like we will get to see the book version of the trio encountering Fluffy for the first time, as Neville will be with them. We will get to see Neville forget the password to the Gryffindor common room, and tag along with the trio as they are his only way back into the common room. This might be the beginning of the Harry Potter series bringing us more book accurate scenes in the seasons to come.
The Harry Potter series will premiere on HBO on December 25, 2026. Season 2 has been greenlit by HBO.
