The Boys Season 5 is just three days away, as the eight-episode final season will drop on Prime Video this Wednesday. Therefore, the show's cast and crew are promoting the final season round-the-clock. One of these promotional interviews was between Karl Urban and the online entertainment portal, MovieWeb.

In that interview, Urban discussed why he enjoyed playing Butcher in the upcoming final season. If the actor is to be believed, Billy Butcher is in a morally wrapped place in The Boys Season 5. Urban's actual words were:

"I think what excited me most was, first of all, the fact that Butcher is essentially so desperate that he's turned himself into the monster in order to defeat the monster. That was wonderful because it opened up a whole new, fresh territory for me to play as an actor. As you know, when he goes into that mode, when he flicks that switch, it's very cold, very Terminator-like, and then the other side of that coin was, you know, sort of really trying to discover or hold onto what shreds of humanity that he had left. And so that was a real joy in Season 5 to get new fresh territory to mine."

What do Karl Urban's words mean for The Boys Season 5?

It seems that Billy Butcher himself might be one of the antagonists in The Boys Season 5. This is not surprising, considering Butcher is the unexpected antagonist in the comic as well. In the comics, Butcher kills Homelander and Black Noir (revealed to be a Homelander clone), and then proceeds to kill his own allies, including M.M., Frenchie, and the Female (the name "Kimiko" is given only in the Prime Video series).

This storyline soured readers on the comic as a whole, which is why it is unclear if the show will adapt it from the source material. However, it will not be surprising if the show's writers choose to stick to this plotline from the comics. Moreover, the season 4 finale did set up Butcher's dark turn. Ryan killing Grace Mallory in The Boys Season 4 finale was the nail in Butcher's hope for Ryan.

Right at that moment, Butcher gave in to his dark side, and he handed over the control to Joe Kessler, Billy Butcher's dark side. Armed with the supe-killing virus potent enough to kill Homelander and every other supe, Billy Butcher sets out to carry out a supe genocide in The Boys Season 5. It is unclear how the team gets back together if Butcher intends to carry out his genocidal plan.

But one thing is clear: we will lose a lot of characters in this upcoming season. The Boys team has confirmed that The Boys Season 5 will see a lot of deaths. Jack Quaid also addressed this in a recent Collider interview:

"The craziest thing about reading these scripts was, obviously, when we read the scripts, that's the first time that we get to be fans of the show. That's the only time when we have no idea, really, what's about to happen, and we're reacting to it in real time, much like when fans watch the show. Usually, we're reacting to big, crazy moments, all the blood and the gore, and obviously that's still in the show, but the stuff that really hit the most was, I mean, as Eric has said, no character is safe, and that's very true. I would get to a point in the script where a character meets their fate, and it would really hit hard, because we've been a part of the show, we know these characters very well, we know the actors portraying these characters very well, so this season has a real weight to it because the stakes are that high and anyone can go like that [snaps]."

The first two episodes of the fifth season will drop together on Prime Video on Wednesday. After that, The Boys Season 5 will follow a weekly release pattern.
