Matthew Perry's sister Mia Perry Bowick is opening up about the emotional story behind Friends' iconic wedding episode. Talking exclusively to People, she shared that everyone knew how serious his disorder was, so no one really knew what might happen next. Speaking of Friends' wedding episode, she told People:

"Watching that wedding, we all knew he wanted that in life. He wanted a partner, he wanted kids."

Matthew Perry played Chandler Bing on Friends, the funny and sarcastic friend who was always ready with a quick joke. He was also Joey's best friend and Ross's college roommate. One of Chandler's biggest storylines was his relationship with Monica Geller.

Matthew Perry's sister Mia talks about the story behind Friends' wedding episode

In the Friends Season 7 finale episodes titled The One With Monica and Chandler's Wedding: Part 1 & Part 2, Chandler gets nervous about getting married and runs away. Thanks to Ross and Phoebe, Chandler is found and brought back, and Joey gets to officiate the wedding, making the wedding even more special for the couple. In the end, they exchange the rings as they become husband and wife, giving viewers one of the most memorable moments on Friends.

Speaking of the episode of Friends where Chandler Bing marries Monica Geller (played by Courteney Cox) in Season 7, Matthew Perry's sister Mia shared with People that they all knew Matthew wanted the same kind of happiness in his own life. He wanted a partner and children of his own.

Matthew Perry opened up about his struggles with addiction in his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing. He shared that he started drinking at the age of fourteen and spoke about how it made him feel happy and at peace. Although, according to his sister, Matthew Perry had always wanted a partner and children of his own, he never married or became a father during his lifetime. Perry died in 2023 from the acute effects of ketamine, according to People.

Mia's words about her brother come just days before Netflix releases its documentary on the actor. The three-part documentary titled The One About Matthew Perry is scheduled to release on October 27. The documentary features stories from his sister, Mia Perry Bowick, and his lifelong friends.

Speaking about her brother, Mia Perry Bowick told Tudum that it took her time to feel ready to share her memories of Matthew and talk about what it was like to love him through the different stages of his life. She also wanted people to see him as a whole person, beyond his role as Chandler on Friends and his struggles with addiction.

Talking about the important role Matthew played in her life, Mia continued by saying that her brother helped shape the person she is today and the work she does. She also shared that he had a kind heart and could make people laugh and feel loved, even during his hardest times. Through the documentary, she hopes people will get to know the person Matthew was beyond his role as Chandler on Friends. For Mia, the series marks her first on-camera conversation about her brother.
