Henry Cavill to produce a Warhammer 40,000 animated series featuring Space Marines

The popular British miniature wargame Warhammer 40,000 by Games Workshop is being developed into an animated series which will feature an elite group of Space Marines called the Deathwatch

According to Variety, Amazon MGM Studios and Blur Studios, along with Games Workshop, are behind the project. Henry Cavill will serve as an executive producer of the animated series. Secret Level creator and Blur Studio founder Tim Miller, director Dave Wilson, Natalie Viscuso, Vertigo Entertainment's Roy Lee, and Games Workshop's Andy Smilie will join Cavill as executive producers.

Cavill is also set to lead the upcoming live-action series based on the war game franchise. Turns out, the animated series is being developed alongside the live-action project. Mike Flanagan, known for his works in The Haunting of Hill House, The Midnight Club and The Life of Chuck, will serve as a writer for the live-action project.

The upcoming animated show will serve as a spin-off of Amazon's animated anthology series, Secret Level, which included a Warhammer 40,000 episode when it released in 2024. Secret Level was produced by Blur Studios while Games Workshop created the miniature war game.

Dave Wilson, who has previously directed the Warhammer 40,000 episode of Secret Level, is set to direct the animated series. Wilson will also serve as the co-creator along with Band of Brothers' John Orloff.

Henry Cavill will produce Amazon Studios' upcoming animated series based on Warhammer 40,000

Henry Cavill will produce the upcoming animated series based on the popular British wargame. The Superman star has also been cast to play the lead role in the live-action series of the same franchise. According to an exclusive report by Variety, Dave Wilson, known for his work in Bloodshot and Avengers: Age of Ultron, will serve as the director.

Wilson previously directed a Secret Level episode titled Warhammer 40,000: And They Shall Know No Fear. The episode released on December 10, 2024, and is the top-rated episode of Season 1. With over 8.7 stars on IMDb, the episode remains one of the fan favorites to this day. The synopsis via IMDb reads,

"In the grim darkness of the far future, a genetically-engineered warrior who has served on the front lines for centuries confronts his legacy, as his squad hunts down a mutant sorcerer."

The upcoming animated series will serve as a spin-off of Secret Level. The exact plot and cast details remain under wraps as of now.

Warhammer 40,000 upcoming animated series will feature Space Marines

The upcoming animated series will feature an elite group of Space Marines called the Deathwatch. The Deathwatch specializes in hunting down alien threats. This might include the group of soldiers from the Secret Level episode, including Lieutenant Titus. Also called Long Watch or Long Vigil, the Deathwatch consists of Space Marines who serve Ordos Xenos of the Imperial Inquisition.

Speaking to Variety, Wilson revealed that Secret Level was not just an anthology but a launchpad for other projects. Talking about the positive reception of the wargame-based episode, he added:

"The response to the ‘Warhammer’ episode was extraordinary, particularly from fans who understood how much care went into getting the world right."

He further added,

"I’ve wanted to tell a long-form story set in ‘Warhammer 40,000’ for more than twenty years, and I’m incredibly grateful to Games Workshop and Amazon MGM Studios for the opportunity to do it.”
