Here’s how a Captain Kirk line from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 quietly foretold Spock’s heartbreaking death

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 Episode 2, 'The Griffin Incident,' released on July 30, 2026, on Paramount+. A particular Captain Kirk dialogue from this episode set the stage for Spock's death in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, which is set twenty years after the events of Strange New Worlds Season 4.

In Episode 2 of Strange New Worlds Season 4, Kirk, Lieutenant La'an Noonien-Singh, and Lieutenant Spock are sent to USS Griffin, an infected ghost ship with a deadly spirit. This mysterious entity preyed on the Starfleet officers' psychology. The Griffin manipulated Spock, questioning his belief that humanity holds greater virtue than his being a Vulcan. Apart from that, it also pointed out Kirk's failure as a parent to his son David. For La'an, the Griffin used her fears and manipulated her. The synopsis of the episode read (via IMDb),

Kirk's update to La'an about his son and Carol Marcus sets up the premise of Spock's death in The Wrath of Khan. While walking through the USS Griffin's halls, when Kirk's asked about David and his mother, he replies that,

"Carol's great. Incredible mom. Just got approved for her dream project."

This dialogue proves that Carol Marcus has got permission from the United Federation of Planets for Project Genesis. Carol always wanted to build technology that would allow her to terraform dead planets and turn them into living worlds. Marcus wanted to end hunger and overpopulation in the galaxy.

In Star Trek II, we saw how Khan Noonien Singh stole the Genesis device to take revenge on Admiral Kirk. In the end, Spock sacrifices his life to save the Starship Enterprise as Khan tries to detonate the Genesis Device, seeking to kill Kirk.

It's quite surprising that Kirk informs La'an, who is Khan's ancestor, about Carol's dream project in Strange New Worlds Season 4. La'an carries Khan's augment DNA; thus, when the recessive traits start showing, La'an loses control and becomes aggressive. When the USS Griffin entity starts to control her, La'an stabs Kirk and tells him that his boy will also die a painful death like him. This also sets the premise for David Marcus' death, who will eventually be stabbed by a Klingon as shown in The Search for Spock.

Spock succumbed to radiation poisoning in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

In Episode 2 of Strange New Worlds Season 4, Spock gets separated from Kirk and La'an. During Kirk's conversation with La'an regarding the Genesis Device that set up the premise for Spock's death, he was not present. In Star Trek II, Spock's Vulcan physiology helped him survive the radiation while repairing the damaged warp core of the Starship Enterprise. Spock was successful in saving the Enterprise as Khan detonated the Genesis Device. However, he eventually succumbed due to radiation poisoning. Spock was then resurrected in Star Trek III.
