Here's how a loophole in Stranger Things gave birth to Stranger Things: Tales of '85

Just when you thought Stranger Things had clocked out for good, Netflix gave us something else to return to the horrors of the Upside Down. While the flagship run of Stranger Things is wrapping up, the franchise is expanding with Stranger Things: Tales From '85, an animated series set squarely between seasons 2 and 3. It will explore the timeline where Eleven has already sealed the gate. So how are there still monsters creeping around Hawkins? That question is exactly where this spinoff begins.

The show is being led by showrunner Eric Robles, who went through the series looking for loopholes and somewhere in the margins of seasons 2 and 3, he found an opening. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he stated,

"I dissected the show, looking for any loopholes. I found a few of 'em. And then I found this one idea that I was just like, 'Oh s---! I think that's it.'" What is this big idea? "Hawkins Lab science meets Upside Down matter," he teases, while noting of the closed gateway, "There's a chain reaction to the creatures that are in our world and the things that are popping up."

Robles has teased that there is a chain reaction involving creatures already in Hawkins. Instead of a simple monster of the week format, the animated series reportedly builds a season long mystery. The threats are connected, the mythology expands. And the tone leans darker than you might expect from animation.

On Stranger Things: Tales of '85, we are taken back to Hawkins as Eleven, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Will, and Max face new supernatural threats. Although Eleven sealed the gate to the Upside Down at the end of season 2, strange disturbances begin surfacing again and it's confirmed what we only guessed: the horror is far from over. The series expands the Stranger Things universe while staying carefully aligned with established canon, offering fans a new chapter set in a familiar timeline.

Robles decsribed the show as "Hawkins Lab science meets Upside Down matter" as he talked further and added,

"It's got its bite to it. The stakes are real for the kids. It's not Scooby-Doo, man. It's not like, 'Oh, well, it'll be fine.' We don't know if it'll be fine."

He also added that we will get to see "a lot of freaking cool monsters," which means more mysteries, more mayhem, and more horror in Hawkins.

We also have a brand new cast, led by Brooklyn Davey Norstedt as Eleven aka Jane Hopper, Luca Diaz as Mike Wheeler, Braxton Quinney as Dustin Henderson, Elisha Williams as Lucas Sinclair, Benjamin Plessala as Will Byers, Jolie Hoang-Rappaport as Max Mayfield, Brett Gipson as Jim Hopper and Jeremy Jordan as Steve Harrington. They are joined by Odessa A'zion, Lou Diamond Phillips and Janeane Garofalo in undisclosed roles.

Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 will premiere on April 23.
