"High classification flying saucers are real": UFO researcher sheds light on 1950 top secret memo 

The story of secrecy around UFOs goes back much further than modern accounts, and UFO researcher Grant Cameron points to a 1950 memo as one example. He also discusses a document written by Wilbert Brockhouse Smith, aka Wilbur, after he had spoken to American officials about flying saucers and what the U.S. government was allegedly aware of about them.

He says on the Jesse Michels podcast:

"High classification flying saucers are real."

For Cameron, what is so remarkable about the document is the degree of secrecy it is claimed to set out. The memo, he says, did not just record sightings or rumour.

Rather, it described flying saucers as a highly sensitive topic and mentioned attempts to understand both how they worked and other strange effects associated with the phenomenon. Cameron also draws attention to a less familiar detail in the document.

Alongside questions about the objects themselves, the memo reportedly mentioned possible mental phenomena connected with the UFO subject. That point became especially important to Cameron years later, as he began looking beyond the physical side of the phenomenon.

Researcher Grant Cameron talks about what the 1950 UFO memo allegedly revealed

Cameron describes Wilbur’s document as a "famous top secret memo" and says it is among the few such documents whose existence the Canadian government does not deny. He adds that Wilbur kept his own copy, although that personal version did not carry the official top-secret markings.

According to Cameron, Wilbur recorded five major points. The first was that flying saucers existed, based on information he said came from American officials. Cameron repeatedly stresses this source because Wilbur was not claiming that ordinary witnesses had told him this.

The memo also reportedly said the UFO hardware was not under Air Force control. Cameron says Wilbur was told it was being handled by American officials instead, suggesting a separate level of control over the material.

The researcher said:

"He said [Wilbur] the UFO hardware is not controlled by the Air Force. It is controlled by American officials, not by the Air Force."

Cameron continued:

"So he said flying saucers exist. It's the most highly classified subject in the United States, rated two points higher than the H-bomb."

The document then reportedly referred to a group headed by Dr. Vannevar Bush. Cameron says its purpose was to work out the modus operandi of flying saucers, or, in simple terms, to understand how they functioned.

UFO Files raise questions about mental phenomena

In the same podcast, Cameron says he now focuses on the memo’s reference to "mental phenomena". He recalls the document saying American officials had indicated that other things could be associated with flying saucers, including effects involving the mind.

He says:

"... And then the next sentence that came to me in February 2012 popped in my head. The next line of the thing said, "We were also told by American officials that other things might be associated with the flying saucers, such as mental phenomena."

This was the thing that changed the way the 1950 discussion looks today. He says it was not limited to the physical "nuts and bolts" side of UFOs, such as the construction or propulsion of an unusual craft.

He argues that, according to the document, officials were already considering whether something involving the mind could form part of the phenomenon. Cameron therefore describes this as evidence that such questions were being discussed as far back as 1950.
